We were delighted that our Vicar and his wife joined us during the evening, as we know they had another engagement that same evening. After supper and the Royal Toast, we danced to recorded music and everyone enjoyed a good evening. A big thank you was given by our President to all who worked and helped in any way. Your next outing is on 20th July, and don't forget that we are closing for the month of August.

STOCKBURY PARISH CHURCH

You may soon be seeing scaffolding at the church - perhaps even before you read this - as the work on the roof is now authorised and efforts to raise money are in hand. I know that demands may have seemed heavy recently, but I hope that our envelope collection and the other events (see the Diary) will have your full support. As I wrote last month, the church is a concern of the whole community, and I feel sure that this community will respond in the present situation.

STOCKBURY GARDENERS' ASSOCIATION

The June meeting was held at 'Daynall', by kind invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Friday, and we thank them both for a lovely evening. Twenty-eight members were present. Our Cheese and Wine Evening was a great success, but it would have been nice to have seen a few more people there. The July meeting, on the 7th, will be a talk on the Propagation of Shrubs, by Mr. Joy; we shall meet in the Village Hall on that occasion.

DON'T FORGET THE SWEET PEA AND ROSE SHOW ON JULY 2nd AT 3.30 p.m.

THE VICAR WRITES ...

There is, inevitably, an air of Jubilee about this magazine, coming as it does in the wake of the recent celebrations. What a wonderful time it was, wasn't it? A11 over the country, as in our two villages, people joined in services of thanksgiving and parties and sports in honour of our gracious Queen on the occasion of her Silver Jubilee. There was, for a few days, a real sense of community, of people coming together, and for a while we forgot the divisions that some people tell us exist among us - divisions of class, education, colour, for example. What a lot of people, I feel sure, are asking now is; "Need we lose this sense of 'togetherness' now that the main celebrations are over?" Well, I suppose it is up to each of us to do what we can to make sure that we don't! And we can only begin where we are - in our own villages.

May I remind those who send in material for the magazine that our next issue is a double one - for August and September. So please make sure that you cover both months, and it would be helpful if I could have your contributions by the 10th of July if at all possible.

Yours sincerely,

Neville Brook.
