HARTLIP VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE
The Village Hall Committee's contribution to the Hartlip Silver Jubilee Celebrations took the form of a children's Party and a Dance. Both events were very well supported and were considered by those who participated as a great success.
Seventy young people were entertained in the Hall on Saturday afternoon, 28th May. Their ages ranged from a little girl who said, 'I am just three - I was two yesterday' to several 11-year olds, one of whom when asked if he had enjoyed himself, replied 'No The noise of the small children has given me a flaming headache'. The party fare was provided by the ladies on the Committee; and the entertainment by an excellent magician with Punch and Judy. Debbie Short and Bruce Gardiner were chosen to assist the magician and they obviously enjoyed themselves and learned a trick or two in the process. During the afternoon the children sang "God Save the Queen" with great enthusiasm, to the excellent accompaniment of Norman Burgess.
On June 4th the Jubilee Dance was supported by many people both in and outside the Village and covering a wide age range from the Youth Club to some Senior Citizens. Dancing was to a surprisingly good disco 'The Yellow Bird'; indeed the dance floor was comfortably crowded throughout the evening. Again the meal was provided by the ladies of the Committee. Proceedings were brought to a close with the National Anthem, everyone singing, facing the black-cloth depicting Her Majesty which was created for the Coronation in 1952 and which had remained under the Hall stage for the intervening 25 years.
Apart from providing entertainment in celebration of the Silver Jubilee, the abject of the Dance was to defray the cost of the children's Party. So generous were those who took part that in addition to meeting the cost of the Party, which amounted to £65, and the outlay on the Dance of £105, a clear profit of £62 was realised.
I must express my grateful thanks to everyone for their unstinting help and contribution to the success of both occasions. It is invidious to select anyone in particular, but I feel mention must be made of the beautiful decorations provided by Marjorie and Dennis Lansdowne.
The Hall Committee is preparing a plan to undertake certain very essential repairs and redecorations and to purchase some much needed furniture. Additionally, work will soon be put in hand to convert the former billiard room into a small hall for games and meetings and to provide an additional facility for the Village. In order to carry out these proposals, funds are needed, and those who enjoyed the Dance on June 4th may like to make a note in their diaries that the Committee will be organising another Dance on New Year's Eve - Saturday, 31st December, 1977.
