THE VICAR WRITES ...

Whatever view may be taken of Jesus Christ, one thing is certain, and that is that he is still news almost two thousand years after his short life in Palestine. The latest indication of this is the interest - either amiable or churlish displayed concerning the recently published book by seven theologians entitled The Myth of God Incarnate. I haven't read the book, only reviews of it, but it is obviously yet another contribution to a debate that has gone on from very early times about the Person of Christ. But the book has been presented in the papers as if it were a completely new challenge to traditional belief in the divinity of Christ. On the contrary, as I've just said, the Christology (the name given to the study of the Person of Christ and, in particular of the union in him of the divine and human natures) debate has gone on for centuries and, no doubt, will go on while ever men have minds to ponder the mysteries of God. And it is a healthy thing that such debate should continue. But, at the same time, it is well to remember St. Paul's words to the Corinthian Christians: "Divine folly is wiser than the wisdom of man, and divine weakness stronger than man's strength"; and, "...there is no place for human pride in the presence of God." (I Corinthians 1:25 & 29). Incidentally, may I draw your attention to the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord on August 6th, when there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at Hartlip at 9 a.m.

Talking about Christian belief, it is hoped to arrange some Sunday evening services in the Autumn under the general heading: What Christians Believe. I hope that some visiting speakers will be coming to talk about various aspects of Christian Belief, and that discussion will follow. More details will be published in the October magazine, but book the dates now if you are interested in coming along. The proposed dates are: October 30th, and November 6th, 13th and 20th.

Hartlip patronal Festival takes place on September 29th, and the main services will be held on the following Sunday, October 2nd, when the preacher at Evensong will be the Revd. Fred Smale, your former.... (cont.)
