FROM THE VICAR
My dear People,
There are two matters of some importance to which I would like to draw your attention. The first is the Termination of Pregnancy Bill which will soon be coming before the Commons for its final Reading. I do not pretend to know a lot about the Bill nor is there space to elaborate on any aspect of it. I do believe, though, that this is a vital issue for our society, possibly threatening the principle of respect for the sanctity of human life. I note, too, that official misgivings have been expressed by The British Medical Association and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Whatever our politics or station in life there would seem a duty for all of us to acquaint ourselves urgently with the basic facts, and the pros, and cons, through Press and TV and then for us to do some hard thinking. Most of us accept the need for a moderate measure of Abortion Law Reform. If, however, you feel this Bill goes too far, then you should write to our M.P. Alternatively, if you wish, you can sign a moderately-worded petition form, which is available inside the church.
The second matter is Christian Aid Week - 15th - 20th May. Some ways and means of giving towards this country-wide effort are listed on another page. My plea is simply that everyone should give. No amount is too small; the C.A. Bulletin tells of one octogenarian pensioner, wife and daughter, who, thankful for their small but sufficient diet, put away a penny a meal all the year round - over £13 p.a. In a rapidly shrinking world we just cannot ignore famine in Ethiopia or India, and the Christian Churches would be failing in their duty if they did not lead the way. Just in case someone is saying "What about family planning?" let me say that Christian Aid recently sent £3,000 to help India's Christian hospitals extend their family planning services.
Finally, we have to record a loss to our community in the sudden death of Mr. Cyril Vincent, known to many of us as a retiring but generous and philanthropic person. We have also been saddened by the sudden death of the Rev. James Clifford, Vicar of Rainham. He and his curate had kindly taken services here on Low Sunday, which was typical of their constant willingness to help and I and the churchwardens feel the loss of a valued friend and colleague. Our sincere sympathy goes to the two families concerned.
Your sincere friend and Vicar,
JOHN GREEN.
