FROM THE VICARAGE STUDY
My dear People,
One of the things that has clearly emerged from our Lent Discussion Group is that many of us do not know nearly enough about our own Church and Faith — its worship, its teaching, its Orders. Moreover, as the majority who read this magazine would claim to be members of the Church of England, this is something that concerns most of us in the parish. It is obvious that this state of affairs is a grave hindrance to effective witness for the Christian faith or to worthwhile discussion with other Churches. To put it in more worldly terms, we are not likely to cut much ice as a soldier or potential partner unless we know what we stand for and why. As a supreme example, can we all explain why we believe in the Resurrection?
I submit that this is a challenge to all of us, clergy and people, to inform ourselves urgently about our Church and Faith. Rather obviously, it can be done through regular worship (and the teaching stemming from Bible-readings, sermons, etc.), through discussion groups and confirmation classes and finally through reading. This last is the surest and quickest way, but apparently rather distasteful to the average layman, if interest in our Lent bookstall is any guide. In this respect, I can, recommend two excellent little paper-backs that are on sale in the church - "The Faith, History and Practice of the Church of England" (Eaton, 4/6) and "A Christian's Guide to Church Membership" (Winter, 3/6).
Finally, there is a further challenge, to be found in our cover photo; a challenge to every confirmed member of the Church, particularly as we approach Easter Day. The Prayer Book is quite definite in its instruction that every communicant should make his communion at least three times in the year, of which Easter is to be one. Even more compelling, though, are Our Lord's own memorable words "Do this in remembrance of me".
A very Happy Easter to you all.
Your sincere friend and Vicar,
JOHN GREEN.
