ROUND THE SOCIETIES

Women's Institute

Mrs. Swayne came to Hartlip Women's Institute to give a most entertaining talk on "Being a perfect hostess", which was enjoyed by all members present.

Mrs. Lawrence presiding, thanked everyone who helped with the Village Fete, and it was announced that Mrs. Wallis will be having a bring and buy sale and providing tea at Yew Tree Cottage on July 29th from 3.30 to 5 p.m.; members are asked to bring friends.

Mrs. Miles, who is in hospital, wrote to thank members for the gift they sent her, and we were all glad to hear she is making good progress.

Miss Whitehead won the competition for the prettiest head-scarf.

The hostess was Miss Wise, helped by Mesdames Philpot, Jarrett and Danby.

The next meeting will be on September 8th at 2.30 p.m., when Mrs. Archer will be talking on home-made wines.

Cricket Club

Better weather has enabled the club to play five games, with good conditions and enjoyable cricket. Our batting has been proved still to be brittle. The three defeats were offset to some extent by a good win over the successful Borden side. Torrential rain abruptly prevented what might have been an interesting finish on the tiny but good High Halstow ground.
