accepted, to have an "exchange" plant stall at the October meeting, in addition to the cake stall mentioned in the programme.

A most enjoyable demonstration and talk was given on the care of the skin and on make-up generally, by Mrs. Cherry Parrett of Beauty Counsellor. Miss Bobby Partridge volunteered to be the "guinea pig", making a very charming model and appearing thoroughly to enjoy the process! Mrs. Kelvie won the competition for a flower arrangement depicting a song title, hers being "There's a long, long trail awinding".

Mrs. Partridge was hostess, helped by Mesdames Chismon, Leonard, Marshall and J. Smith. Mrs. Ferrett and Mrs. Ingleton were, as usual, busy with the trading stall.

The outing to the House of Commons on 30th June was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. Mr. Wells welcomed us and conducted us on the tour. Although the House did not start business until the afternoon, there was much activity just the same and we caught a glimpse of Mrs. Barbara Castle, Major Clive Bossom and Mr. George Wigg. After the visit we all went our separate ways for lunch and the remainder of the afternoon, and arrived back in Hartlip at 9 p.m.

There is no meeting in August. The next one is on 10th September at 2.30 p.m., when there will be a film showing all the "workings" of the Women's Institute.

Guides and Brownies

1st Hartlip Guides

This month we have (to us) three exciting pieces of news! I am delighted to report that our team which entered for the Gillingham Divisional Competition - Barbara Pemble, Mary Jarrettfi Susan Reade, Susan Lloyd, and Penelope Hollands, won the shield for the second year running! It was a most exciting contest, arranged by one of the County trainers, and took place in Queendown Warren on Saturday, 13th July.

We are, all being well, about to have our first "Queen's Guide", Mary Jarrett; she takes her final badge next Saturday, 20th July. I say all being well, because all her reports have to go to the County Commissioner and then to Guide Headquarters before the badge is passed and awarded. We wish her luck, it has meant a lot of hard work and determination!

After a year of saving and planning, most of the older guides will set off for our "Swiss Adventure" on Saturday, 3rd August. We are going to stay in Unspunnen, Interlaken, and shall be visiting the Guide International Chalet in Adelboden.

The Brownie Pack are entering the Rainham District Sports on Wednesday, 24th July, 5.30 p.m. at Wakeley Road Schools, in case anyone feels they can spare the time to come and cheer them on! This will be our first public appearance as a Pack! Unfortunately the date has clashed with the Hartlip School Service, so we shall have to do without half our members.
