HARTLIP YOUNG WIVES

On the 20th September we started our new programme with a very interesting Cookery Demonstration by Kake Brand. Mrs. Marshall showed us how we could turn ordinary sponge into a delicious chocolate gateau by using Kake Brand products. Her other recipes were enjoyed by us during our coffee break.

On the 4th October we had an interesting film, with an introduction by Richard Attenborough, and the film was followed by a talk by Mrs. Christine Swann about Muscular Dystrophy. Christine herself suffers from the disease and has to use a wheelchair. I am sure we were all struck by the way in which she spoke and by her cheerfulness. Afterwards members were able to purchase goods from a wide variety on sale, and proceeds went to the Muscular Dystrophy Group. About £14.00 was raised. Our thanks to Christine and to her friend who came with her.

Our meetings in November commence on the 1st with a talk by Mr. Bradley on the work of a Swedish Consul. This will be held at Burwell Grange. On the 8th November we are holding an open meeting at which Canon David Diamond is going to talk about Life in Deptford. Everyone will be welcome at this meeting. On November 22nd we are having a talk and film on Sanderson's Fabrics; the speaker will be Mr. Yeandle.

Fireworks Night: Saturday, November 5th. The Vicar and Mrs. Brook have kindly agreed to let us have our Bonfire Party at the Vicarage. Everyone will be welcome, but bring your own fireworks which, as in the past years, should be handed to the Vicar or Mr. Lansdowne when you arrive so that all fireworks can be set off in one place for safety's sake. The bonfire will be at 7 p.m., admission will be free but refreshments will cost 10p per head.

Mrs. Bumstead inspired us all with her talk on 'Making the Most of Meat' and by giving us some delicious recipes for economical dishes. She was thanked by Mrs. J. Silver.

So successful was the 'shopping coach' to Oxford Street that there is to be another one on Wednesday, November 16th, leaving the church at 9 a.m. Non-members will be welcome and anyone interested should telephone Mrs. Ferrett: Newington 842345.

President Mrs. Joan Ingle congratulated Mrs. I. Carlton who won the competition for a paper necklace for Hartlip at the recent Group meeting. Mr. Carlton was also thanked for his part in clearing the churchyard. There will be a ceremony in 'Tree Planting Week' on Wednesday, November 9th, at 2 p.m. in the churchyard, when Mrs. Ingle will fix a plaque to the tree planted by the W.I. for Jubilee Year.

The flower of the month competition was won by Mrs. D. Partridge. Tea was provided by Mrs. Auger and her helpers. Next month is our A.G.M., so come along and vote for your next committee.
