"KIRCHENTAG"
Canterbury Cathedral is to be the scene of a "Kirchentag" an Saturday, May 14th, 1977. Of necessity, planning began eighteen months ago for what is seen as a large scale event for adult Christians from all over the Diocese.
"Kirchentag" means "Church Day" and the organisers are looking for an attendance of between 500 and 1,000 people who, as well as hearing distinguished speakers, will be invited to take part in group and project work. Every part of the huge building will be in use throughout the day. Participants will be able to concentrate an one of three themes, each of which will be addressed by a personality of national importance.
Thus, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs. Coggan will speak on Family Life; General Secretary of the T.U.C., Len Murray, and the Rt. Hon. William Deedes, Editor of the Daily Telegraph, will discuss "Contemporary Commitment", and the Very Rev. Tony Bridge, Dean of Guildford, will lead the section titled "Worship".
The Day is designed to provide an opportunity far adult Christians to deepen their understanding of some aspects of the Christian Faith and to worship together. The organisers hope that every Parish throughout the Diocese will send a group to the Cathedral, and that other denominations will also be represented.
