(which Mr. Jennings already does, having administered the chalice at Holy Communion far some time), occasionally preaching and doing a certain amount of pastoral work. In view of the fact that a Reader is also doing his (or her - for there are women Readers as well as men) secular job, his time is well committed and, therefore, his work in the parish has to build up gradually. So don't get the idea that we have a curate an hand! Seriously, though, it is heartening to have someone in training, and I hope that Mr. Jennings will have the support of you all in every way, not least by your prayers. Readers do very valuable work throughout this country, and there are many churches that would be without services were it not for the fact that Readers are willing to go and minister there. I'd like to write more about the office and work of a Reader, but space is not available this month. Another time, perhaps.
Finally, a word about the Silver Jubilee. It is hoped to hold a service on the lawn in front of the school on the morning of Tuesday, June the 7th, with the children taking part and, we hope, many people in the village. There will, of course, be a celebration of Holy Communion, probably at 8 a.m., on that day at Hartlip and later in the morning at Stockbury Church. And on Saturday, June 25th we are going to have 'something' (a garden party has been suggested, as has a children's art competition) in the vicarage garden, followed in the evening by a concert in Hartlip Church given by the well known Southwark Singers, who have an international reputation.
A very Happy Easter to you all.
Yours sincerely,
Neville Brook.
