ROUND THE SOCIETIES

Christian Fellowship

In order the better to understand our own religious views it is good occasionally to hear others presenting theirs. To this end the Fellowship has been making a practice of inviting one speaker each year who presents a different viewpoint on religion. We have heard a Quaker and a Jew. On 27th January we are to have a visit from Father Burke, who will present the Roman Catholic viewpoint. This should be an evening of vital importance and considerable interest to all members of the Fellowship.

Looking forward to February, we shall be having an illustrated talk on a lighter subject: "A Continental Tour". The speaker will be Mr. R. Poulter and the date: 10th February.

Young Wives' and Mothers' Fellowship

How often have you stood in front of a picture and liked it, and yet not known why? Mrs. Dagmar Hayes (who is also Secretary of the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral) is going to try and help remedy this on 18th January. Entitled simply "Art", her talk will have a touch of history as well as suggestions as to what to look for and how to appreciate. Slides will help her do this.

Finally, Tuesday, 1st February, should have a ring round it in, your diaries - the A.G.M., when the year will be reviewed and a committee elected.

Women's Institute

Mrs. Trickle presided over the December meeting and warmly welcomed members, visitors and representatives from Iwade, Bobbing and Newington Women's Institutes to the Birthday Party.

Business was kept to a minimum and a varied programme of games and competitions brought us to a delicious tea time buffet, provided by the Committee. Mrs. Trickle presented farewell gifts to Mrs. Philpot and Mrs. K. Stevens who are leaving the village and thanked them for their past support and interest, assuring them that they would be greatly missed by us all. The highlight of the afternoon came with a play reading which was given a great ovation.

Another interlude for refreshment - Christmas cake and wine generously given by Mesdames Trickle, Kelvie and Marshall, and then Mrs. Leonard thanked the ladies of the Committee for all the planning and hard work behind so successful a party. A short session of Bingo, conducted by Miss Danby and Miss Wise, followed by the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded the happy occasion.

There will be an open meeting on January 11th at 2.30 p.m. in the Village Hall, when a film on "Canadian Holidays" will be shown. Please bring your friends. All are welcome.
