19th November - "Winter Floral Arrangements" Mrs. Sloane.

Despite it being another wild, blustery evening, about thirty of our members braved the cold cheerless darkness, and throroughly enjoyed watching our speaker. She brought the warmth of the russet leaves, and the gold of the decorative bauble, and, under her fingers, as she skilfully moulded twigs into plasticine, there appeared little oases of beauty. A silvered log, ivy leaves caressed with just a touch of silver paint, a silver candle ... and the effect was delightful. Mrs. Sloane has been leaving these arrangements in little odd places in hospital corridors, waiting rooms, and they must be a delight to the tired eyes of anxious patients and busy staff. The approach of Christmas means that, with one small tin of silver paint and a trip to Queendown Warren, we too can bring gaiety and novelty into our homes.

Following on the very successful Harvest Supper and the joint Service, the winter programme really got under way with a suitably ghostly evening on 31st October - in the Village Hall. A story of a ghost ship and a gruesome game in the dark contributed to the atmosphere. Financial result - nearly £3 for charity.

The first talk of the season was by our Methodist minister on his work as Borstal chaplain - a difficult task, frequently disappointing but occasionally highly rewarding and inspiring. Work done by the boys in creating a small chapel for their use was one of the encouraging things. About 75% of the boys are from broken homes - sufficient evidence of the main reason for juvenile delinquency. In spite of a small attendance, an evening well spent by those present.

A busy and well-attended meeting was held on 12th November, with Mrs. Lawrence presiding. Two new members, Mrs. Green and Mrs. Williamson, were welcomed and Mrs. Kelvie read her report on the half-yearly Council meeting at Ashford. A new committee for 1964 was formed, with Mrs. Lawrence unanimously re-elected President. She thanked all the retiring committee for their help in the past year, especially Mrs. Stephens, our hard-working and efficient secretary. Mrs. Wallis gave her annual financial statement, as treasurer, and final arrangements were made for the Birthday Party on 30th November. Mrs. Clark, the Voluntary County Organiser, gave an interesting and helpful talk on the quite vast field W.I. covers. A most beautifully home laundered shirt won Miss Whitehead the competition.

Next meeting - 10th December - Members Day.
