lucky enough to live close by, and before completing the notebook one must mention the cuckoo which I personally heard for the first time on April 19th at Stockbury - perhaps somebody has an earlier date?

ROUND THE SOCIETIES
Junction Club
We would like to hear immediately from anyone keen to join us on an outing to Blackpool for the illuminations in September/October. Leaving on a Friday evening and returning late Sunday evening, the outing would include a conducted tour of the lights, boarding-house or hotel accommodation and Sunday lunch. Maximum cost will be about £5 5s. 0d. We are also running a day trip to Clacton at the end of July and are taking bookings and deposits now.
Starting 17th May we expect to have a group playing at the club every third Friday. On other weeks, as now, we have an up-to-date selection of the latest records and new amplifying equipment - come and join us.

Young Wives' Fellowship
Recent programmes have covered widely differing aspects of art. On 2nd April we had an illustrated lecture on etching by Mr. Hunter. Many of us were new to the subject and we were fascinated by the description of the bewildering techniques which modern artists employ. On 19th April Mrs. Scott addressed us on the subject of flower arrangement and showed what can be done with a few flowers, and nimble fingers.
We are planning a visit to a small pottery at Yelsted on 7th May, and on 21st May, when we are to have an open evening, a cordial invitation is extended to all interested friends to join us in seeing films of Wedgwood pottery and Princess Alexandra's wedding.

Women's Institute
Those attending the monthly meeting heard an illustrated talk on Solid Fuel by Mrs. A. Stephan, who was thanked by Mrs. Wallis. Next month's meeting will be at 7 p.m. on 14th May, with Mr. K. Dice, of the N.S.P.C.C., as the speaker; there will be a cake stall and all proceeds will go to that society. Please also note for your diary - the W.I. are having a Coffee Morning (with Bring and Buy) on 13th June at Acorn Cottage from 10.30 to 12, in aid of the Village Hall Funds. Anyone is very welcome.

Brownie Pack
Nine of the Brownies returned on Easter Monday after a week's successful Pack Holiday at Dudsbury, near Bournemouth. There was plenty of wild life to be seen around the site of the Brownie House, including rabbits and kingfishers. The Brownies "good turn" to the house was raking flat the molehills made by the extremely active Dudsbury moles, who gave us ample opportunity to help! We visited Poole, Wimborne and Bournemouth during the holiday and attended matins on Easter Sunday at the 800 year old country church at Parley Cross. Three Hartlip Guides, Kay Buchan, Linda Chick and Jane Burrows, came as helpers.
