FROM THE VICAR
My dear People,
I wonder how many of you have looked recently at the Children's Corner in church? Besides the small Lent bookstall, there is an excellent little effort by most of the Juniors from our School - it is an African village, with illustrative map and background, complete with unexpectedly fierce tigers and lifelike elephants and giraffes. Very much the children's own work, it forms a realistic setting for the S.P.C.K. "bookvans" being used for Lent boxes; it is well worth a look. At the same time, may I draw the attention of parents of children of 8 years and under that there are some good books of prayers for this age-group on sale in church. If your children have been christened, then you promised before God that you would bring them up, "to lead a godly and Christian life". This means, among other things, teaching them how to pray. Few find this easy or know where to find the right prayers. Here in church are some of the best books for you and them to use together.
Some of you will remember with some affection Dr. William Wigan, M.B.E., who lived in Hartlip for two years or so with Mr. and Mrs. Webb. You may not perhaps know that he died just before Christmas at the ripe age of 90. Although I did not know him, I understand that he was a great man, of high Christian standards, who dedicated his life to the service of God and others, mainly in Africa. Death would not, one feels, have had any terrors for him. As our lych-gate triumphantly asserts - "Death is the gate of life". There you have the message of that first Easter morning.
Your sincere friend and Vicar,
JOHN GREEN.
