Women's Institute
Congratulations to Mrs. Rowland, Miss Danby and Miss Wise whose recent afternoon tea yielded £8 14s. 6d. for W.I. funds and a reminder that Mrs. Lawrence will welcome you to a similar function at Thrognall on Thursday, July 14th, from 3 p.m.
Processed cheese was the main ingredient in a selection of dishes demonstrated by Miss Clement at the June meeting. Surprisingly it is useful in sweets as well as savouries and co-demonstrator Mr. Gauden fought back his tears as reckless feminine hands sloshed a goodly measure of finest Jamaican rum into a concoction of Swiss roll, whipped custard and cream cheese. A delicious trifle was born!
Another claim made for this versatile, product was that "it puts new life into the old man". The Women's Institute is now pondering whether it is seemly that they should be responsible for a lot of lively cheese-crazed old men racing around the lanes of Hartlip!

Guides and Brownies
1st Hartlip Guides. The summer term seems to be flying. June weather was kind and we had many outdoor meetings. Each patrol is running a week-end camp and eight Guides are taking the camper's badge.
We have had the help of experts for demonstrations and practice in Judo, Mouth to Mouth Artificial Respiration and First Aid, and a talk from the Police on how the public can help in the prevention of crime. On June 24th we are hoping to celebrate our sixth birthday with a barbecue.
Our final excitement this summer is a visit to Elsinor, Denmark, where we shall be meeting some Danish Guides. We set forth on 25th August. Some of the younger Guides are joining another company for a camp on a farm in Devonshire, and four of my more experienced campers are helping a Rainham company of rather new campers.
The company is running a raffle, with very good prizes and will be grateful for support. We should like to take this opportunity for thanking everyone who has kindly helped us. No one likes asking for financial support, but no club or society can run without funds.

From our recent diary of events two items are outstanding: (1) 15th May, Sunday - we joined Borden at Evensong and met at the home of one of the Leaders for a very interesting talk by a man who composed sound effects for television, films, etc. We were intrigued by some of the snippets from Whiplash, Robin Hood, which he had composed. It was rather a change to hear the sound without the vision sometimes with the television the position is reversed!
(2) Sunday, 12th June - Borden joined us at Evensong and we met in school afterwards for a talk on the work of Parliament by the M.P. for the Division - Mr. Terry Boston. There were plenty of questions on both occasions and they were altogether two very enjoyable evenings.
