FOOD FOR THOUGHT

"Stop passenger and cast an eye,
For as you are so once was I.
As I am now so must you be;
Then pray prepare to follow me.
Dear friends and children, do not weep;
I am not dead but here asleep.
But when I hear the trumpet sound,
I trust in Christ I shall be found."

This apparently self-written epitaph is to be seen in Ivychurch churchyard. It is typical of the simple sincere faith of the 1800s and is one of many such epitaphs to be found in Romney Marsh churchyards. I would be pleased to publish other witty or unusual epitaphs when space permits.
