GUIDES AND BROWNIES

Swiss Holiday as one Guide saw it

On Saturday, 3rd August, a party of 30 Guides and five staff started the long journey to Switzerland. Crossing from Folkestone to Boulogne we caught a train which took us to Basle. After breakfast there on Sunday we boarded another train for Interlaken and from there a coach to our hotel in Unspunnen. We arrived at our hotel in time for lunch and afterwards we went into Interlaken to look at the shops or, if we wanted, we could go swimming. A 7 o'clock we had supper and then most of us went to bed, as we were all very tired.

Of the many excursions one was a visit to the Guide Chalet in Adelboden. We were shown round by two American Girl Scouts, who had been travelling since the end of June. Other places we went to were Kandersteg, the Blue Lake, Grindelwald, Bienz and Murren. One evening we went to see "William Tell" in an open-air theatre and on our last evening we saw a film "The Conquest of the Jungfrau". During the day we had been packing and thinking about the long journey ahead of us.

Thursday morning we took our luggage onto the hotel verandah, all feeling very sorry that the holiday had come to an end. So, at 4.45 that afternoon, our coach arrived and the return journey had begun - Interlaken railway station in the end leading to the harbour at Boulogne and the quayside at Folkestone on Friday morning. This is a holiday none of us will ever forget; we are all very grateful to Mrs. Taylor for making such a wonderful holiday possible.

CRICKET CLUB

Our morale remains good, with two further victories (our second over Stockbury this season) and two defeats (both after close finishes). Stockbury's dismissal for 18 produced two remarkable bowling analyses Holden 5-9, Keeble 4-7, the whole achieved in 9.3 overs, 4 of which were maidens. A. Noble marked his return home with some big hitting, his Bank Holiday 67 included three 6's and at one point there were two search-parties in the orchard, each looking for a lost ball.
