ROUND THE SOCIETIES

Women's Institute

Mrs. Ingle presided at the April meeting when Mr. K. Dice spoke of the work and training of the N.S.P.C.C. Inspectors. Mrs. R. Marshall proposed a vote of thanks. The money raised from a Bring and Buy cake stall is to be sent to the N.S.P.C.C. Names were taken for an outing to Brede Place, near Rye, on 20th August.

Young Wives' Fellowship

On 7th May the Young Wives enjoyed a trip to Yelsted, where we were most hospitably entertained by Mrs. Blackall, who showed us how it is possible to combine the craft of potting with the normal activities of one's kitchen. We were particularly interested to see the varieties of texture and colour obtained by using different clays sand glazes. Mrs. Blackall experiments with local clay, and would be very pleased to hear from anybody who knows where there are open seams of yellow clay, preferably at least seven feet below ground level.

After the initiation at Yelsted we greatly enjoyed a film and lecture about Wedgwood pottery and its creator, on 21st May. We were pleased to see members of the W.I. and other visitors who joined us on this occasion, when we also saw a film about Princess Alexandra's wedding.

Guides and Brownies

The Guide Company is now eight years old, and the Brownie Pack six, and a great deal has been achieved by its members in those years! Ten Guides have got their 1st Class this year before it was discontinued, Leslie Ambrose, Kay Buchan, Diane Graham, Penny Johnson, Jane Kinslow, Angela Knight, Anne Maitland, Judith Melville, Stephanie Morris and Jennifer Watson.

The new books are in circulation and are full of new ideas! We think they are very good. This complete change of the Guide and Brownie plans seemed the best time for a change all round, so having started the Guides and Brownies and having had many happy times with them both, I feel it is the time for me to retire, with very many thanks to all the mothers and the children past and present who have given me their support!
