VICARIOUS
Dear Friends,
There is a great deal for which the people of Hartlip have reason to be grateful to our former vicar and his wife. On all sides one hears expressions of real regret at their departure. Of him I have heard the remarks: "I owe a tremendous amount to him" and even "But for him I don't think I should still be here". Such words are a wonderful tribute to his ministry in this village and to his real love for people. Both Mr. and Mrs. Green will be sadly missed in Hartlip.
At a different level the members of the church have reason to be grateful for their gift to the church of the flower pedestal which now stands in the Lady Chapel. This was specially made by Mr. Cockett to fit in with other features of the chapel. Also included in the gift was a new flag to fly from the church tower, in place, of one which had become rather tattered.
The churchwardens would particularly like to thank the vicar for the way in which he has eased the transfer to them of the responsibility for church affairs. Thanks also to the many people who have taken over some of the work previously done by Mr. and Mrs. Green.
While he was here the vicar forged a strong link between Hartlip parish and the work of Malcolm and Helene Alexander in Uganda. This young couple married in Hartlip, and are now assisting in a Farm Training scheme under the auspices of Christian Aid. A church has been built by the young men working on this scheme but more money is required for furnishing, and equipment. The Parochial Church Council has sent a gift of £25 from church funds but in order to make the giving more direct we are wanting about 50 people to agree to give 2/- per month throughout 1969. If you are willing to join in this project would you please give your name to one of the churchwardens.
Yours very sincerely,
WILLIAM C. MOORE.
