COUNTRY NOTES
It is always exciting to see a Kestrel in your own garden. There it was, at dusk the other evening, by the vicarage wall. It must have been watching something in the churchyard; twice again I disturbed it and each time from roughly the same spot. Another unexpected pleasure came the previous week - the sight of a covey of ten Partridge on the road by the entrance to Nos. 9 - 20, Grainy Field; maybe these attractive birds are not decreasing as much as is feared. Much scarcer than partridge are thatchers and I suppose it has been of interest to all of us passers-by to watch Mr. Absalom at work on the roof of Church Cottage in the Street; one of only two in Kent, he was specially imported from Hampshire to work in this county. It was a happy coincidence that another craftsman was at work in the church at the same time; organ-builder and thatcher found they had much in common. With November have come several sharp frosts and my chrysanths and roses have at last given up. Even before this, the birds had removed all our berries, except for holly and the "strawberry" tree. But overshadowing the whole country scene is the worst epidemic of foot and mouth this century; to date, 176,000 animals slaughtered. I most sincerely hope the news will be better by the time you read these Notes.
