FROM THE VICARAGE STUDY
My dear People,
I write this immediately after Christmas but I must begin by referring to our Bazaar on 7th December. Due to some complicated expenses, final figures are still not available but our net profit was at least £150. This was a magnificent effort. I say this not only because of the financial result but also because of the atmosphere and spirit pervading both preparations and event. It seemed to me as if people actually enjoyed working for it. It seemed also as if a majority of the parish contributed in one way or another towards its success; and among those who "made or gave" were our Guides, several sick or house-bound and several members of the Methodist congregation. The charming presence of Princess Andrew Romanoff as opener was a privilege and also a distinct factor towards a successful day.
Most of you will have received some presents prior to Christmas Day and the Church also received one that was completely unexpected and therefore doubly appreciated. It took the form of a newly decorated interior of our porch. Having been asked in the first place to do some work on the main church doors the Works Department of the Sittingbourne Co-operative Society then offered to give the materials, and their painters their time, in order to give us a completely re-decorated entrance. To me this showed an excellent spirit that is seldom found these days among firms or individuals and we are immensely grateful. I am sure that this improvement added to the good impression that the Sanctuary Guild always give when they decorate the church on these festival occasions, assisted this time by a Christmas tree and candles in the windows. I need hardly say that it was good - and proper - to see so many people present at Midnight Communion and Mattins on Christmas Day.
Finally, we have our own local photo on the cover. This is one of six that we intend using in 1964. They were taken by my friend, Derek Skinner (of St. Lawrence College), who gave much time and care to the task. Besides being familiar they will, I hope, remind us of the duties and bases of our faith. I have deliberately begun with the Methodist Chapel. January 20th-25th is the Week of Christian Unity and we are bidden by our Archbishop specially to concern ourselves in this New Year with our relations with the Methodist Church.
Your sincere friend and Vicar,
JOHN GREEN.
