mercy. In his prayer, he does not rise above himself, he cannot forget his merits, he cannot realise the spiritual. To pray properly is to be with God. Then the outward ear is sealed, the eye closed, and the spiritual absorbs the natural, and the soul is for a while in heaven. Then the Christian man thanks God that he is not what he was, and asks that he may yet grow in grace till he becomes what God would have him to be.

ROUND THE SOCIETIES
Cricket Club
At the moment of going to press we are celebrating three successive victories, mainly due to better batting. Our last win was by ten wickets and no one, including two longstanding residents, can remember this happening before.

Guides and Brownies
On Thursday, July 18th, the 1st Hartlip Guides and Brownies entertained parents, friends and helpers in celebration of the eight years since their foundation. The Company and Pack also made the occasion one of farewell to their Captain, Mrs. A. C Taylor, who started both Guides and Brownies in Hartlip. Although the occasion was a sad one for the Company, the, Guides hope to continue to see Mrs. Taylor often. In fact, each patrol is looking forward to camping, at Dean's Bottom Farm during the summer holidays.
A presentation was made to Mrs. Taylor on behalf of the Guides by the two senior Patrol Leaders, Angela Knight and Kay Buchan. The Brownies gave presents to Lesley Bostock, who is giving up her position as Tawny Owl to go to college and to Mrs. Chick, who is leaving them to take over the Guides. Other helpers with the Company will be Mrs. L. Setford and Miss Julia Montgomerie, who has ably acted as Lieutenant to Mrs. Taylor and has recently qualified for her Guider's warrant.
