Guides and Brownies

The Guide Company has now been running for seven years, and the Brownie Pack for four. As you will all have heard on the News or read in the papers, the whole Guide Movement is to have a new look, in order to bring it up to date and try to meet the needs of "Tomorrow's Guide."

A Committee, drawn from many people outside as well as inside Guiding, has been working out this difficult problem for the last two years! New illustrated handbooks for each guide and brownie are being published in the new year.

Camping. Four very successful patrol camps were run by the four patrol leaders. Kay Buchan obtained her camp P.L's permit with an excellent report. Congratulations Kay! Two of our leaders also took part in the 25 mile walk arranged by the 7.40 Group. The Brownies went for a very happy Pack Holiday week in "Paxwood", the Kent Guide house. The Pack sends its best wishes to Anne Williamson, for her start in College next term, and many thanks for all she has done for them.

Guide meetings begin again on Friday, 22nd September, and Brownies on Monday, 18th September.

Young Wives' Fellowship

During the summer break the Young Wives were busily practising for their cricket match - Husbands v. Wives - which took place on a perfect August evening. In spite of batting left-handed, husbands were undoubtedly winners - 64 runs to our 25 but we all shared in the celebration which followed, and are hoping that this cricket match will set a precendent for years to come.

A varied programme of demonstrations, excursions and lectures has been planned for the next session and we should be greatly encouraged if we could look forward to an increase in membership. "Young" Wives of all ages are welcome. Our first meeting on September 19th will be addressed by our Vicar.

LOCAL COMMENT

  1. "T.W." heading his comment - "A timely reminder of an old adage" writes: It was a pleasure to read in last month's magazine of the presentation of a travelling iron and a travelling clock to Miss Swan on the occasion of her taking up another and more important teaching post. I wonder if this clock will strike when the iron is hot?
  2. 7.40 Group hiker to fellow traveller: "I've just trodden in a four foot puddle". Traveller: "How did you know it was four feet"? Hiker: "I trod in it twice".
