Women's Institute

Mrs. Trickle expressed her personal thanks to members who had helped with the recent group meeting when Hartlip was Hostess Institute. Over 100 guests were entertained to tea and - a talk by an incredibly youthful octogenarian, Miss Ann Cuthbert, who traced with historical exactitude and impish humour "The Changing Pattern of Family Life".

Later some of our usually impeccably groomed members excelled themselves in a play reading as comic charladies wearing some very odd working gear. One Droll Dolly even sported a mini-skirt which caused great shouts of laughter with its frequent interesting revelations of what seemed to be - in the respectable Womens Institute in respectable Hartlip - red flannel things! Each member of the cast added her own touch of comedy and the play was hilariously received.

Please, ladies, try to attend on November, 8th, when a new committee is to be elected and the speaker will be the V.C.O.

Young Wives' Fellowship

On Tuesday we were privileged to have Mrs. Hayes, Steward of the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral, to speak to us on "Modern Art through the Ages". She showed us with the epidiascope, reproductions of examples of cave drawings, Egyptian sculpture, Etruscan statuary, Byzantine, mosaics, Renaissance painting, French impressionism, modern mobile sculpture and much else. She, pointed out that man is always seeking new ways to express himself, his fear of the universe, his appreciation of nature, his beliefs, ideals and aspirations. He uses new materials and forms to convey new concepts and the ever-widening boundaries of knowledge. It was a pity there was such a small gathering for this very interesting evening. A donation is being sent to "The Friends" as Mrs. Hayes would take no fee.

There will be, no square dancing this session.
