ROUND THE SOCIETIES

Women's Institute

A busy and well-attended meeting was held in June, when Mrs. Kelvie, looking very elegant and charming in the ensemble she wore to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, gave her impressions of that never-to-be-forgotten day.

Mrs. Trickle thanked everyone who gave and helped towards the successful Jumble Sale held recently, and which raised £14 5s. 0d. Mrs. Marshall gave her account of the A.G.M. at the Albert Hall which she attended on the Wednesday, and Mrs. Bailey from our link at Borden, gave her account of the Tuesday's meeting, which was all very interesting and informative.

Members heard Mrs. Salter give a talk on Pickles and Chutney, for which Mrs. Miles gave a vote of thanks and she also won the competition for the best 1lb. of home-made jam. Hostess was Mrs. Stevens, helped by Mrs. Dagg, Miss Danby and Miss Woodcock.

Next month's meeting is on July 13th at 7 p.m., and there is an extra "open" meeting on July 19th, at 7.15 p.m., when representatives from Messrs. Cadbury's will be coming. Please bring your friends!

Guides and Brownies

The Guide Company has never been stronger I am pleased to report! The summer term is one of great activity. Each patrol runs their own week-end camp, arranged entirely by the leader, for enjoyment, and so that the older guides can pass their campers' permit and badge, and the new campers can learn how to pitch tents, make gadgets, and get used to sleeping out of doors under canvas!

Five 1st Class Brownies have come up this term, Jill Browne, Zena Causey, Judith Melville, Stephne Morris and Susan Pounds, and four of them are camping; also Sharon Cork and Linda Davis who came up in January. (Thirteen guides entered for Pioneer badge, five of these are only eleven years old, which I think is a County record!)

Lastly, but the most outstanding news, three more guides, Carolyn Birch, Christine Davis and Janet Sparks will receive their Queen's Guide Badge from the County Commissioner, Mrs. Notley, J.P., on Thursday, July 22nd! I am sure the people of Hartlip will join us in congratulating these three. We shall be able to send five guides from 1st Hartlip to form part of the guard of honour at Canterbury Cathedral on July 27th, for Kent County Scout Service. Mary Jarrett and Penny Franklin being the other two, both of whom with Anne Fentiman and Anne Williamson are forming (with three officers) our camp staff.

Brownies have also been able to have a mainly out of door term. We welcome Mrs. Chick who has come to help us and will eventually become Brown Owl, while I change to Tawny - also three new enrolled recruits Anne Cole, Anne Dixon and Marilyn Swift. We hope to have five new 1st Class shortly!
