Womens' Institute

The first meeting of the new year was presided over by the Vice-President, Mrs. Kelvie, owing to the indisposition of Mrs. Trickle. A short silence was observed for Mrs. N. Philpot, whose death occurred recently.

Members were asked for suggestions for some form of small entertainment to round off meetings, which have tended to end rather as a "trailing-off" of members. So - any suggestions, please, to any committee, member.

Major Bride, the Governor of Maidstone prison, gave a fascinating talk on prisons from Norman times up to the present day. His talk was both amusing and grim, and, as Miss Danby said, when she gave a vote of, thanks, we had no idea of the organisation and many aspects of life in prison. Discussion and questions followed.

After tea (provided by Mrs. Kelvie and her helpers) a mock roll-call was held, which proved most amusing and revealed lots about us all and how much travelled some members are. The Bring and Buy Sale last month brought in £3 2s. 6d.

Next month, 9th February, the speaker will be Mrs. Lipscombe, showing some slides of France. New members are especially welcome, so please come along!
