VICAR'S LETTER.
My dear People,
The great Jubilee Day has come and gone, and what a beautiful day it was. It proved a true day of rejoicing everywhere, and we, in Hartlip, had a full share. The Village Committee deserve our heartiest congratulations for the way in which they so perfectly carried out their programme. The day will live in the memories of old and young alike.
The Day School has just been examined by the chief Diocesan Inspector of Religious Knowledge. His report will be printed later on. First and foremost our School exists for imparting a sound religious education, side by side with the Government Secular Education. I should like to ask parents to consider the question of getting the small children earlier to bed. I know the difficulty of the long, light nights; yet infants ought to have eleven hours in bed resting. It is hard for the teachers to get the best from these young scholars who get so sleepy in school time, and it is not quite fair to pupils or teachers either.
The Whit-Sunday Services are printed below.
Your sincerely,
CECIL G. MUTTER
SCHOOL OUTING.
This will be on Wednesday, June 26th. Charabanc coaches leave for Herne Bay via Faversham and Whitstable from opposite the Church returning via Sturry, Canterbury, and Ospringe.
Parents wishing to go should give in their names as, soon as possible, and at least before the 18th. The price is 4/0 and tea extra, Sunday School children free, but all take their own lunch. Members of the Women's Fellowship give in their names to Mrs. Noble at Dane House.
Contributions towards the children's expenses will be gratefully received at the Vicarage.
Please note the date has had to be alterd to a day later than previously announced.
MARRIAGE.
May 4th - Frank Freed to Blanche Annie Mary Christopher.
CONFIRMATION.
The Lord Bishop of Dover administered the Rite of the Laying on of Hands in Stockbury Church on Thursday, May 23rd. Four candidates from Hartlip were presented, viz Gladys Elizabeth Coppins, Winifred Doris Whitehead, Marjorie Alice Whitehead, and Lilian May Dixon. They hope to make their first Communion on Whitsunday
The Bishop, at the conclusion of the service, spoke to the parents and friends of the candidates, and one piece of advice was - "Don't say 'I'll call you in the morning to go Communion,' but rather say 'I'll get up go with you'." May it be so.
WHITSUNDAY.
Holy Communion will be celebrated on this, the Church's Birthday, at 7, 8, and at the 11 a.m. service.
MISSIONARY SUMMER FESTIVAL.
As announced last month it is hoped to hold this at the Vicarage. Date, July 3rd. Time 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Special speakers are coming to tell us of work in the Overseas Missions. The addresses will be on the lawn, and all will conclude with an outdoor Service of Thanksgiving.
There will be a produce stall, a book stall, a curio stall, and teas will be served.
It will be an opportunity for hearing more about the great Missionary work undertaken in the wider field of our Church's activities. "Charity begins at home," but it must not end there.
"Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." That is our Lord's charter to His Church.
Rainham, Upchurch, Newington, Halstow and Stockbury parishes all take part.
