The Vicarage,
25th February, 1926.
My Dear Friends,
It was good to have such a large congregation at the first of the Special Lent Services, when the Rev. C. Cowland Cooper began his Course of Sermons on "The Good Shepherd," and I hope that we may see as many or more present on all the Wednesdays. Those who heard Mr. Cooper's first address will, I think, try to follow the course through. The arrangements for the Services in Holy Week and on Easter Day are given below. It will be seen that we are to have again Stainer's "The Crucifixion" on Good Friday evening, as this was much appreciated last year. Copies of the words will be supplied to the congregation. The Celebrations of the Holy Communion at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., and midday on Easter Day, will, I hope, make it possible for all Confirmed Members of the Church to come to the Lord's Own Service at the Great Festival. Should any be hindered by sickness I shall be pleased to arrange to administer the Sacrament to them privately if they will express their wish for me to do so.
The Parochial Church Meeting on 18th February was fairly well attended. The Hon. Secretary gave an interesting account of the doings of the Council in the past year and of the work of the Churchyard Committee. The various accounts connected with the Church were presented. A printed statement Of them is enclosed in this Magazine. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Lieut.-Colonel R. G. E. Locke for all his work in connection with the accounts, and to all the Church helpers for their services during the year. Messrs. W. S. Stevens, W. A. Miles, R. C. J. Southgate, L. Hales, W. G. Kitchingham, J. W. Harriss, J. Harris, E. T. Friar, L. J. Baxter, W. H. Flack. and F. Musselwhite, Mrs. Creaton, Miss Faussett-Osborne, Mrs. L. Hales, Mrs. Rainey, Mrs. S. A. Friar, Mrs. Baxter, and Mrs. Mills were elected as the Church Council, with the Vicar and Churchwardens ex-officio. The representatives to the Ruri-Decanal Conference are Lieut.-Col.-R. G. E. Locke, Miss Faussett-Osborne, Mr. W. Miles, and Mr. S. D. Hollands, and Colonel Locke represents the parish on the Diocesan Conference. The Sidesmen chosen are Messrs. W. S. Stevens, L. Hales, J. W. Harriss, G. Harriss, E. T. Friar, F. Musselwhite, W. H. Flack, and C. F. Woodcock.
Mr. P. Harriss is to be congratulated on the success of the Whist Drive and Dance held in the Schoolroom on February 5th, for which he worked so hard, and a most enjoyable evening was spent by the many who were present from our own parish and adjoining villages. The statement of the account shows that the funds of the Cricket Club benefit by £6/16/7.
Space does not allow me to do full justice to the great effort of our Church Choir on February 12th. I think no-one who heard the Concert will blame us if we are just a little bit proud of giving such a good show all by ourselves - except for the two ladies who called themselves "Deputy-Organists"! That the Concert was well attended is shown by the "takings," which amounted to £4/5/1, and the whole of this sum has been credited to the Choir Music Fund, for nothing was deducted for expenses. At the close of the Concert Colonel Locke expressed our thanks to those who kindly gave their services in preparing the room, and to Mr. Miles for carting the chairs, etc., free of charge, as well as to the Organist and the Choirmaster.
We look forward to the promised visit to Hartlip of Mr. Lilwall's "Versatile Quartette" in Easter Week when we must try to clear off the debt on the Churchyard Enlargement Fund. You will see by the Balance Sheet that it is now only £5/11/10.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
