The Vicarage,
27th July, 1926.
My Dear Friends,
During the time I have been away from home I have been worshipping mostly at the grand old Parish Church at Hythe which some of you may have seen. The services there are beautifully rendered and the congregations large. On one Sunday evening I went to evensong at the Parish Church at Sandgate and on another at St. Mary's, Dover. After attending big town Churches for four Sundays, I came back to realise afresh the beauty and charm of our own little Church and the Services in it. I think others must have the same feeling when they return to Hartlip after even a few weeks away.
This year, as many of you know, a special effort is being made by the Church of England to realise more the duty of carrying out our Lord's command to "go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." We do want more of the missionary spirit, for Christ's purpose in creating His Church was that He might use it as His instrument for the evangelization of the world. This effort is called "The World Call" to the Church. It began last January when nearly 3,000 delegates, representing every Diocese in England and Wales, gathered in London to consider the whole big question of missionary work. For a year before this gathering of the delegates, many experts had been busy preparing four Reports on the needs of the Church in (1) Africa, (2) India, (3) The Far East, and (4) The Moslem World. These Reports show how the world is calling today to the Christian Church for the message of the Gospel. The great gathering in London has been followed by numerous conferences and meetings in every part of the country and now, as the Bishop of Salisbury has said, "The missionary obligation must be brought home to every parish." In our Diocese, it has been arranged for special Messengers, commissioned by the Archbishop, to visit the parishes and speak about the "World Call." Our messenger is to be the Rev. G. Hillyard, Vicar of St. John's, Maidstone and he is to come to us for the week-end September 25th to 27th. Full particulars will of course, be given later on of the arrangements and we must try to make the most of Mr. Hillyard's short stay with us. We are, I think, fortunate
in having him for he is much in touch with the work as hon. secretary for the S.P.G. in the Archdeaconry of Maidstone. I ask your prayers for God's blessing upon this special time and that in all this important matter we may "both perceive and know what things we ought to do and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same."
We had two pleasant gatherings when the band played in the Vicarage garden in June. I hear that possibly we may have the band again one Sunday evening In August. If this can be arranged, a notice will be put on the board in the Churchyard.
Three members chosen to represent the Mothers' Union (Mrs. Flack, Mrs. S. A. Friar, and Mrs. Hawkes) and the enrolling member (Mrs. Creaton) attended the Diocesan Jubilee Festival at Canterbury on July 30th. The new banner was taken and used for the first time. At 2 o'clock a conference was held in the Chapter House at which many interesting matters were discussed and after tea, a procession was formed in the Cloisters to the Cathedral for the Thanksgiving Service. The service was a beautiful and impressive one and the sermon was peached by the Chaplain to the Mothers' Union. Besides our own Parish Banner, the new Deanery Banner, which has been subscribed for by the branches, was used at this Festival for the first time
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
