Hythe,
25th June, 1926.
My Dear Friends,
I said in last month's Magazine that the Rev. H. G. Prescott would take my place during my absence. Unfortunately, Mr. Prescott was obliged to cancel his engagement at very short notice. He is the Vicar of a colliery parish and he felt that it would not be right for him to be away from it during the strike. I am glad to have secured the help of the Rev. A. E. Ball who will be with you from July 1st to 2Oth.
We may all congratulate ourselves on the excellent result of the Sale of Work on June 3rd. The Balance Sheet printed below gives a full statement of the receipts and expenditure. It will be seen by this that we have a net profit of nearly £31. Of this £2/10/0 has already been sent to the Zenana Missionary Society as the profit on goods supplied by this Society (they realised £5), £4/6/9 is due to the Women's Meeting account, and £3/9/9 to the Girls' Friendly Society. A meeting of the helpers will be held later on to decide about the distribution of the balance for Missionary work and our own parish funds. The weather in the morning of the Sale gave us much anxiety but we decided to put up the stalls in the garden and, although the sky was cloudy, the rain kept off and all was well. It was nice to see quite a good number present at the opening ceremony, performed by Mrs. Green, and to have the Sale so well attended later in the day. The many willing helpers all threw themselves most heartily and cheerfully into their various tasks and made the whole affair go with a "swing."
About twenty members of the Mothers' Union attended the Jubilee Festival Meeting for the Deanery which was held in Sittingbourne on June 15th, and four delegates from our parish are to attend the big Jubilee Festival Service in Canterbury Cathedral on July 30th. A Banner (which we are proud of as being home-made) was dedicated before Evensong in the Church all Sunday, June 13th, and it will be used for the first time at the Festival at Canterbury.
A large party of the members of the Women's Meeting and some of their friends had a very enjoyable outing
to Hastings on June 8th. We started, soon after 7 a.m. in the rain but before we reached our destination the weather cleared and the rest of the day was fine.
This year the Girls' Friendly Society Branch Festival was held at Tunbridge Wells on June 10th, and seven from Hartlip were able to join the party of 46 from the Deanery. Aftea tea a service was held in St. James' Church, and a pleasant day was spent. Further results of the Girl's Friendly Society Candidates Competition have now come in. In the knitting team, May Philpott, Nora Philpott, and Lily Simmons gained first place in the Diocese and their work has now gone to London for further competition. In the needlework, Rhoda Smith was commended for a child's overall. A set of bags made by Ruby Hales, Winnie Philpott, and Gladys Hollands, was also commended.
Our annual house-to-house collection for the Churchyard Fund is due to be made at the end of July and the committee are looking forward to the usual liberal response to it. We began this year with a balance in hand of £13 but as we have had to buy a new mower at a cost of £6/13/0 and had to spend £2 on further improvement of the new ground as well as paying for the regular work, we have now only just about enough to carry us on till the time of the collection. We are all proud of our Churchyard and I sure you will gladly contribute to the cost of keeping it in good order.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
