The Vicarage,
September 29th, 1924.
My Dear Friends,
We are all very pleased with the work which has been done in the Church. The distempering of the walls and ceilings has not only made the Church look fresh and clean but it has also made it mach lighter. It will be noticed too how the white ceilings show up the beams in the roofs and the light stone colour of the walls adds to the effect of the beautiful screens.
Owing to the late hop picking we have been obliged to put off the re-opening of the Day School till Monday, October 6th. This makes the holiday a rather long one, but we hope the children will be the better for it and all be in their places when the School begins again.
Another great improvement in the Churchyard is suggested. Colonel Locke has very kindly offered to put into it a corner of his garden. He proposes to carry on the North Wall of the Churchyard to the bottom of the new ground and to make a return wall from it to the public footpath. He will be allowed by law to reserve one-sixth of the ground he gives as a private burying space. There can be no question that this will add greatly to the appearance of the Churchyard as well as making additional room and we appreciate Col. Locke's generous offer.
The Harvest Thanksgiving Services will be held on Sunday, October 5th. There will be celebrations of the Holy Communion at 8 a.m. and Mid-day, Matins at 11. Children's Service at 3 (children are invited to bring eggs, fruit, or flowers for the Hospital to this service) and Evensong at 6.30. The collections at all the services will be for St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester. We shall be glad to have anything suitable for the decoration of the Church sent in good time on Saturday morning and we shall welcome the help of any who can come to assist in the work of decorating.
The Annual Festival of the Diocesan Church of England Temperance Society is to be held this year in Sittingbourne. On Sunday, October 19th, there will be special preachers in all the Churches of the Deanery.
At Hartlip we are to have the Rev. E. L. M. Allen in the morning and Mr. G. F. Jacques, the Police Court Missioner, in the evening. I much hope that a special effort will be made to attend the Services on this Sunday and that we may have large congregations both at 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. The collections will be for that very important and valuable work the Kent County Police Court Mission of the Society.
On Monday, 20th, Public Meetings will be held in Sittingbourne in the afternoon and evening. The Archbishop is to preside in the afternoon.
The Meeting to decide how the proceeds of the Sale of Work are to be divided will be held in the Club Room on Friday, October 10th, at 6.30 p.m. We shall be glad to see at it any of those who took part in arranging or carrying on the sale.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
The Women's Meetings will begin again on Thursday, October 9th. Those who are in charge hope to see then all the old members and any new ones will be welcomed at the Club Room.
