The Vicarage,
July 28th, 1923.
My Dear Friends,
Mrs. Creaton and I want to express our great appreciation of and our thanks for all the kind thought for us in my illness. Although we have been here for only five months we both feel almost as if we were amongst old friends.
I am thankful that I am now so much better and getting back my strength but I am told that I must go slow for a time and I am sure you will understand the reason if I am not able to be about in the parish as much as I could wish for the next few weeks.
It has been a great regret to me that I have been obliged to let some things stand over for a time. We had just arranged for a meeting of some of our young people with a view to starting a weekly social gathering for outdoor amusements in the summer and (if it can be arranged) some indoor recreation in the winter. We hope to have this postponed meeting soon now, and if the idea is taken up, there will be more to say about it later on.
Colonel Locke and I (and I am sure many others in the parish) are anxious to go forward with the proposed enlargement of the churchyard. It is necessary for us first of all to get some information as to the cost of carrying out the work of fencing, levelling, etc., so that we may have something definite to put before the parishioners.
I am told that some have missed the ringing of the bell for the daily Matins during these past weeks. I am glad that it should have been so. It will be heard again regularly soon I hope for I attach much importance to the daily service not only for myself and for any others who may be able to attend it but for the parish generally. Our Prayer Book also attaches importance to it as you will see if you look at the piece in the beginning of the Prayer Book "Concerning the Service of the Church." Why? Because it is the carrying on of the daily worship in the Parish Church of Almighty God and of the prayer for the Church, the Nation, and the Parish. It is not, of course, expected that many can come to it, but all when they hear the bell ringing, may just remember that their minister is in their Church to pray for God's blessing on them as well as on himself and to carry on for the parish the public worship of the Almighty.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN THE DAY SCHOOL.
The Diocesan Inspector visited the School on June 25th and he sent a most pleasing report of what he saw and heard. We Christian people feel that the religious instruction of the children is that part of their education which is of the chief importance. Important as the rest of their education is, it must be based on the sure ground of the Christian Faith and nothing should please a parent more than to know that the religious instuction is being carefully, thoroughly and reverently given in the school.
THE MOTHERS' UNION.
A meeting was held at the Vicarage, on Thursday, July the 19th, when Mrs. Lister, the Diocesan Secretary, gave a most helpful and interesting address. We were sorry that so few were able to be present, but when the meeting was arranged it was not realised that many would be busy fruit picking. We hope that the next meeting will be fixed at a time when it will be convenient for all the members to come to it.
