Hartlip Parish Magazine - October, 1920.
Dear Friends,
The holiday season proved difficult for correspondence, therefore I could not arrange the date of our Harvest Thanksgiving either on the Sunday before or after the Dedication. The date now fixed is October 10th; and please note that the early celebration that day will be half an hour earlier than usual, viz., at 7.30 a.m. The preacher at 11 a.m. will be the Rev. C. E. Woodruff, Rector of Tunstall, "Six Preacher" in Canterbury Cathedral, and its Sub-Librarian. May I ask all, who possibly can, to make a special effort to get to that service, for somehow or other we are very slack as regards morning service attendance.
The evening preacher will be our old friend Canon Denham, Residentiary Canon of Rochester Cathedral; who though very much called upon both in and out of the diocese, yet never refuses to help me, if he can possibly do so. His name and ability, are potent influences in themselves, therefore we are highly favoured in his coming to our little parish.
The next important event will be the visit of the S.P.G. Travelling Exhibition on Thursday Oct. 14th, when over 400 interesting curios will be on view from our Colonies and Heathen lands; arranged in six different sections, viz., (1). South Africa, (2). Japan, (3). Central Africa, etc. (4). Australia, Figi Islands, and West Indies, (5). India, (6).China. Any of these exhibits will be explained to you as you visit the various stalls, by the helper who is in charge, and cannot fail to be of great interest both to old and young. Our Guild children hope to be able to render some Native Chinese, and Telugu Melodies which are decidedly quaint, so absolutely different to what we are accustomed.
It is intended that the Exhibition shall be open in the afternoon for an hour or so: then closed for an interval of rest: and open again in the evening for an hour and a half.
In this way, those who can't come out in the evening, and those who can, will be able to see this wonderful collection of curios and hear the melodies sung; and also listen to the "Ten Minute Talks" at the stalls by the Expert, about the people and their doings in lands we can never hope to visit.
There will be a charge for admission, one price for the afternoon, and a lesser one in the evening: but particulars will be circulated in the parish, including the hours of opening and
closing. There will also be a Literature Stall, which will give an opportunity to buy some books about other countries and their inhabitants.
The Exhibition will be held in the school-room, and will afford to you all a unique opportunity of getting a glimpse of the lives and habits of men and women who live in remote parts of the world from us, and of their tools and dress, and shoes, etc., etc. Please tell vour friends in Rainham, Halstow and Newington about it, because it is open to all. We shall be very glad of volunteers to give a hand in the preparations, especially at 12 o'clock on the 14th for 20 minutes, to assist in clearing the desks out of the room, and putting in the platform; and also the reverse at 9 p.m. Our men as a rule come splendidly to the front on such occasions as this. We wish to avoid any expense, and thereby escape the Entertainment Tax.
As I write this final paragraph the tide seems to be turning in favour of at settlement between the Owners and the Miners, we sincerely trust that this may be realised. But there are also rumours of the extremists in South Wales refusing to follow their leaders, which may endanger a settlement.
Your faithful Friend and Pastor,
J. SMEDLEY McMILLAN.
