Hartlip Parish Magazine - September, 1920.
Dear Friends,
The Great Lambeth Conference - of some 252 Bishops - after five weeks serious discussion and the issuing of its Report, has concluded its sittings, and doubtless ere this its members have begun their homeward journey to divers parts of the earth. The Report of its proceedings is published, as also The Encyclical Letter signed by our Archbishop, which letter - especially - should be carefully read by everyone, as it refers to weighty matters of the highest importance. To one of which I would briefly refer, partly because it occupies the minds of all those who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity and truth, viz., the Re-union of Christendom. It has made great strides in the last decade, and the Bishops have spoken out so candidly and clearly in the Encyclical, as to draw out the spontaneous good will of the leaders of the various religious Bodies.
Possibly what may be considered the Greatest Lambeth Conference in recent times concluded on August 8th, 1920, by a strange coincidence the Great Church Council of Nicaea, after 9 weeks deliberation closed on August 25th, A.D. 325, when the 318 bishops dispersed to their homes. So too, it happens that I write this on the eve of the 1595th anniversary of that event.
We have already reaped a local advantage from the Lambeth Conference, inasmuch as one of the American Bishops when visiting Hartlip most kindly accepted my invitation and preached for me on Sunday, July 25th, morning and evening. It was quite refreshing to be a listener, and also to hear the old truths put forth in the brisk and striking American style, though he was somewhat above the heads of some of his hearers; yet I feel deeply grateful to Dr. Kinsolving the capable and attractive Bishop of Southern Brazil. The collections that day were given to the Special Fund of the S.P.G. as became the occasion when a Missionary Bishop was preaching, and amounted to £2/11/8.
By this, I trust every subscriber will be in possession of an audited Balance Sheet of the Porch War "Record" Memorial account showing the total receipts and expenditure to be £60/18/1. I desire to express my gratitude to all who in any way gave their support in bringing this undertaking to such a successful result. Photos
of this Memorial, showing each name most distinctly, are on sale in the Village.
The Dedication of our Church we hope to celebrate as usual on Wednesday, September 20th. St. Michael's Day by a celebration of the Holy Communion at 10.30 a.m. and Festal Evensong at 7.30 p.m., with sermon. The preacher will be announced later.
The collections will be given as formerly to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution which should appeal to an agricultural parish like ours.
Our harvest Thanksgiving will be on the Sunday before or after September 29th, being dependant upon which day I can get a preacher. The offertories that day will be - as always - on behalf of the Rochester Hospital and therefore will claim our most generous support.
As I write there are alas rumours of strikes in various parts of the country, the most alarming of which is that of the miners. If they go out on strike then business will be paralised.
Your faithful Friend and Pastor,
J. SMEDLEY McMILLAN.
