HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.

MAY, 1908.

Dear Friends,

The penitential season of Lent, 1908, has gone beyond recall, but it is to be hoped that at least some of its lessons have been learnt by us, and that the words of the various preachers have assisted to that end. Especially was Mr. Easton's course on Wednesday evenings both attractive and stimulating to spiritual effort. I am deeply grateful to him for so kindly complying with my request - made a year ago - to visit us weekly during this season.

It was a great disappointment to me not to be able to officiate on Good Friday owing to the loss of my voice, but by the kindly help of my excellent neighbours the gaps were filled. Especially did l feel this, owing to the fact that I had secured some months ago, a set of Statuary slides, than which none could be better. I feel sure they must have been appreciated by the congregation, as also Major Gibbon's address on each.

Our Church was very nicely decorated, this Easter - thanks to the helpers all, as also the senders of flowers and plants. The number of Communicants, including those recently confirmed, was encouragingly good I am pleased to say, though at the same time some there are who have not "kept the feast" this Easter-tide.

Our Festival Services were marked by heartiness and brightness, thanks to choir and organist, into which all could not help but join, and be helped thereby.

On Easter Day our Choir Boys were vested in new cassocks made of Russell cord, one of the usual and best materials for this purpose. The money has been collected and the cassocks made by means of Working Parties, all of which is due to the kind initiative of Miss Faussett Osborne, to whom I am very grateful.

Our Juveniles who took Collecting Cards for the Pan Anglican Thank-offering Fund, have been most indefatigable, indeed two or three have exceeded expectations. The following is a list in the order of the amounts collected:- James Weller, Mark Kitchingham, Matilda Hollands, Ellen Gold, Alfred Divers, Percy Miles, Frank Acott, Arthur Miles, Leslie Hunt, Edmund Harris, and Willie Apps. The children have thereby contributed two pieces of gold to this world-wide-fund, and I sincerely trust

that the envelopes left at each house will have coins regularly dropped into them, so that our Parish Thank-offering may be worthy of this great effort to extend the Kingdom of Christ in the lands beyond the seas.

I remain, dear friends,

Yours sincerely,

J. S. McMILLAN.
