APRIL, 1908.
Dear Friends,
The Education question is once more to the fore, by another Bill introduced by Mr. McKenna into Parliament.
He has missed a great opportunity of settling once for all this "lamentable and harmful controversy."
Fair play must be exhibited by all parties. We are prepared to give it, and we also expect to receive it. Mr. McKenna, I believe, has said that ... the Government must ... "have regard to the history of existing institutions, and to the varied traditions, habits, and beliefs which exist among our people, and which to many are the dearest part of our lives." And again, he maintained "it is impossible to ignore the fact that large sections of our community desire a type of instruction in which more definite denominational teaching is given than in our existing Council Schools," and in view of "the great sacrifices which have been made in the past by devoted men and women in founding and maintaining these Voluntary Schools," he urged upon Parliament that to refuse to recognise these schools "would be regarded by many people as an act of pitiless injustice." Now let these sentiments of Mr. McKenna's be incorporated honestly in his Bill, together with the Right of Parents to have a choice in what their children shall be taught, and the Education difficulty would be well nigh settled.
Canon Malden gave a very interesting Lecture on India, its people, and temples, on March 17. The excellent slides gave us some idea of the fine buildings, with their beautiful carving, which the heathen erect for worship.
Mr. Easton's course of sermons on Wednesday evenings are much appreciated, and must be of great help to all who are privileged to hear them.
As usual, there will be a Lantern Service in Church on Good Friday at 7 p.m., for which I have secured some very good slides. Let us observe this ATONEMENT DAY, as one of our Nonconformist brethren remarked to me recently, it "was the most solemn day in the year, and should be kept in a QUIET, SOLEMN WAY."
And, consequently, if we are observing Lent in the spirit the Church bids us, and make Good Friday a conscience-searching day, then we shall be able to enter into the joy of the Easter Festival, and celebrate the greatest miracle of all time, viz., that "He is Risen" indeed: and show our gratitude to
Him by receiving "His Body and Blood" at Eastertide.
There will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 8 and 12 on Easter Day, and at 10.30 on Monday and Tuesday.
May we all, in St. Paul's words, "Keep the feast, not with .... the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
I remain, dear friends,
Yours sincerely,
J. S. McMILLAN.
