HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.

MARCH, 1908.

Dear Friends,

Lent is close upon us once more. It is a call to self-examination, repentance, and self-discipline in real earnest; persevering where we have failed, the keen desire to learn even from the sins of the past, and to inscribe on the leaves that yet remain of the book of life a better record; such are the lessons each Lent teaches us. Let us endeavour to learn these by having a few minutes daily all alone for quiet thought, and reading a few verses of Scripture, by attending all the Services we can during Lent, and thereby being helped.

The Week-night Service this year will be on WEDNESDAY, at 7.30, the only night the preacher, the Rev. J. G. Easton, can come, who will kindly preach each of the six Wednesdays, beginning with March 11. I hope you will all make an effort to be present at these Services.

There will be a short Service, consisting of Litany and Devotional Reading, on Wednesdays, at 10.30 a.m., and Fridays, at 3 p.m.

These Services are intended as helps to all who may he able to attend them. I do my part in arranging these various aids for your spiritual advancement; it lies with you as to the use that is made of them.

On Tuesday, March 17, Rev. Canon Malden will give a Lantern Lecture on "Missionary Work in India," in the School Room.

Since last writing two deaths have occurred:-

(1) Mrs. W. S. Harnett, though a non-parishioner, took a great interest in our Church and Sunday School. In the latter she taught for some years, which help I appreciated much, especially as she travelled three miles every Sunday to teach the young, which was a proof of her genuine zeal and love for the Master. May her noble example quicken others to do the like work of tending Christ's lambs. Patient endurance in much suffering was mercifully vouchsafed to her.

(2) Mrs. Edward Godden, Grainy Farm, passed peacefully away on Sunday evening, January 26. She had been confined to her bed for several years, but she bore her increasing weakness and feebleness with courage and true Christian hope, ever buoyed up with the affectionate and constant attention of her devoted children. May God reward them for such self-sacrifice.

We are having a special preacher morning and evening on March 1st - he and I are the only two of that name in the List of Clergy - the Rev. John MacMillan, Domestic Chaplain to His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury.

I would ask your prayers on behalf of those who are being prepared for the sacred rite of Confirmation.

I am, dear friends,

Yours sincerely,

J. S. McMILLAN.
