HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.

FEBRUARY, 1908.

Dear Friends,

So far - January 20 - only one of the juvenile patients has returned from the Fever Hospital, but I trust that all of them will be home ere you receive this letter.

Our Church looked exceedingly well in its Christmas garb; especially the East End, which had almost a July mass of bloom. To all the decorators our best thanks are due for their tasteful work, and also to those who contributed to the musical service on Christmas Day.

On January 2 our Sunday School Treat and Prize Distribution took place in the Schoolroom, after an excellent tea, followed by games initiated by Mrs. Wix and Miss Faussett Osborne; the scholars were reminded by the Vicar of the sacrifices made on their behalf, by the teachers, every Sunday morning and afternoon; also of the time spent during the week in preparing their lessons, and that the scholars should show their appreciation of this more and more, by regularity and good behaviour. When the screens were removed by Mr. Locke, a very pleasing and surprising figure became visible, surrounded by all sorts of good things, which were distributed to each afterwards. Sweets were provided by Mrs. Locke, oranges by Mrs. McMillan, and crackers by Mrs. Denson, donations from Mrs. Faussett Osborne and Mrs. Gibbon. The prize winners went home with handsome volumes under their arms.

A lecture was given by the Vicar on January 16, in the Schoolroom, illustrated by over fifty slides, on the history and work of the S.P.C.K., founded in 1698. The immense sums that this society raises for Promoting Christian Knowledge both at home and abroad, and has done for 210 years, and the power for good it exerts in every land and in every tongue, is, indeed, an education which should be sought by all.

The ground has been lowered, and the foundations protected by concrete, between the West and the North door of the Church, and a tar-paved path laid down - wide enough for public use - in the hope that this will cure the damp on that side of the Church.

The Pan-Anglican Congress, which meets in June is a subject of paramount importance, which you will receive a leaflet about, with this Magazine.

Believe me,

Yours sincerely,

J. S. McMILLAN.
