HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.
JANUARY, 1908.
Dear Friends,
We have closed the year somewhat sadly - at least, many homes have - owing to sickness.
We are all sorry for the cause which necessitated the closing of our Day and Sunday Schools on December 13, viz., an outbreak of scarlet fever in our midst. Seven cases have been taken to the Fever Hospital at the time of writing this letter, and it is sincerely hoped that that will be the complete roll. Our sympathy goes out to the parents, whose Christmas joy will have been marred by the enforced absence in Hospital of one or more of their children at this happy, festive season, when the little folks look forward to fun and merriment, and all alike anticipate the complete family circle.
May all the little patients soon return home well and strong.
In the year just gone three gifts were made to the Church:- At Easter, the Font Ewer, by Mr. and Mrs. Locke; about Christmas time, the completion of the chiming apparatus, which is now an ornament to the Church, by the kind generosity of Mr. H. F. Snow; and thirdly, what our East End stood much in need of, and which it was my great pleasure to accept, a Reredos containing a representation in Caen stone of the Lord's Supper, mounted in Bath stone, which, of course, will be erected behind the Altar, and form a suitable background to the Holy Table. This handsome gift is made by Mrs. Faussett Osborne, Sen., and her family. It will also mean the lowering of the Sanctuary floor, thus dispensing with the middle step. The result of this will be that Communicants will kneel at the first step instead of at the second, as at present, and the East End will be APPARENTLY heightened.
We are making an improvement in the Church paths, which was much needed. Of this I may speak again.
We have lost a parishioner, Sara Birch - who recently came to Hartlip and, had she lived till May, would have completed 100 years.
Our Registers have no record of one so old for over a century.
I trust that health and prosperity will be vouchsafed to all in our parish during the year on which we are entering, and that the short text for January 2 may be fulfilled in each of our lives; then all will be well, viz., "God with us."
Believe me,
Yours sincerely,
J. S. McMILLAN.
