HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.

JUNE, 1908.

Dear Friends,

There was laid to rest on April 28 one known to many of you, and who was a loving and dutiful daughter to devoted parents, as also a true friend to some with whom she had been brought up. Miss Stevens had many seen many years of strenuous work in a London Board School, but every holiday was spent in her home at Hartlip.

Many would he surprised to hear of the death of our old Parishioner, Mrs. John Black, at Apperley Bridge, where Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner made her such a happy home.

The Annual Easter Vestry was held on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. In opening the Meeting, the Vicar expressed the sense of loss which we, in common with the Empire, felt on the death of the ex-Premier, Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman, in which sentiment all joined.

Mr. Locke gave a statement of the accounts for the past year, showing that over £110 had been contributed by collections, subscriptions, etc., for the work of the Church here, and of that amount there was a balance in hand of £66 7s. 6d. This shows our finances to be in a most satisfactory state, and also the wisdom of having an Evening Offertory every Sunday.

Mr. Locke and Mr. Denson were again elected Vicar's and People's Wardens respectively.

Two new Sidesmen, were chosen, making ten in all, and the several duties of each were discussed and settled.

The Choir-men and Ringers, together with their wives or sweethearts, assembled in the Schoolroom - at the invitation of the Vicar and Mrs. McMillan - to a "Social" on May 1, at 8 p.m. A series of slides were shown by means of the lantern, illustrating the Vicar's tour last summer in Switzerland, via Paris, concluding with slides - familiar to all - of Hartlip, viz., Dane House, Hartlip Place, The Parsonage, the Church and Yard, and the Vicarage. Songs were contributed by Miss Faussett Osborne and several of the company, after which refreshments and fruit were partaken of in the New Room. The singing of the National Anthem at 11 o'clock brought a happy evening to a close.

On Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m., the Annual Day School Entertainment was given by the scholars and staff, consisting of action games, action songs, recitations, dialogues, and drill, the production of which involved a vast amount of practice, and, therefore, great credit is due to the staff. There were eight bars, ten medals, and twenty-six certificates won in 1907 for regular attendance. These were presented by Mrs. Denson. A cordial vote of thanks to her having been passed, Mr. Denson briefly responded.

I have again issued my Annual Appeal for the Churchyard Fund. I hope it is clearly understood that this Fund has nothing to do with Church collections whatever, but is separately and solely for the upkeep of the graves and yard; hence I keep the account myself, so that it is not mixed up with the Churchwardens' Accounts at all, but is quite a separate thing by itself.

I hope all our Communicants will observe Whitsunday exactly as they did Easter, and try to be present at the 8 a.m. or noon Celebration, or on Monday at 10 a.m., as it is one of the greatest Festivals, viz., that of the Holy Spirit. I earnestly pray that He may descend in ever-increasing power on our Church and Parish.

The Annual Flower Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Whitsunday.

I remain, dear friends,

Yours sincerely,

J. S. McMILLAN.
