The Vicarage,
26th August, 1930.
My dear Friends,
At a meeting of the Churchyard Committee held on 31st of July, it was decided to put in hand the building of the extension of the wall on the south side of the new ground. For a long time we have been collecting funds for this and now we are able to manage it. Next month's Magazine will, I hope, have a statement of the account in it. The building of this bit of wall will complete the work in connection with the extension of our Churchyard which we began six years ago. I think we may all congratulate ourselves upon a very satisfactory and useful task done for the good of the village. A plan of the new ground and a register of the burials in it is being prepared, so that it may be known exactly where new graves should be dug and a full record may be kept of interments that have taken place. The little piece of ground on the north side of the public path and below the part which belongs to Colonel Locke, is to be reserved as a "Children's Corner."
In response to the invitation sent out by the Council of Youth, a good number of young people came to the Vicarage on Thursday, 21st, and we were pleased to welcome many from other parishes. At the meeting the Rev. E. J. Bastin, Curate of Holy Trinity, Maidstone, gave us an account of what is done by the Fellowship of Youth in his parish, and it was decided that some from Hartlip should go over to Maidstone next month and see what is done there before a Fellowship is definitely formed in our parish. After the meeting some refreshments were handed round and amusing games were played in the garden till the light failed, and then Community Singing in the house finished up a pleasant evening. I hope that we shall hear soon of some definite and useful outcome of the meeting.
Of course our Sunday School Children thoroughly enjoyed their outing to Sheerness on 19th. The weather was fine and everything passed off without a hitch from our start at 7.45 a.m. to our return at 8 p.m. As usual we had some sports in the afternoon. This year these took the form of "Team races" and the children entered into them with great keenness. We were able to give each child the money for a ride in the boats, on the pond, a large stick of rock, and a banana. Sister Margaret and her helpers provided an excellent tea for us in the Holy Trinity Hall, and altogether we had a right down good day. Our best thanks are given to Colonel Locke and to Mr. Stevens for conveying us to and from Newington
Station, and to all those who kindly subscribed the money for the treat, and to the collectors. From the Balance Sheet printed below it will be seen that the amount collected was 5/1 more than our expenses, but this year we had not so many children with us as last year, for several were, unfortunately, unable to go.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
