The Vicarage,
October 22nd, 1929.

My dear Friends,

It is now generally known that the Rev. T. L. Brooke is to take my place during my absence from home, and I go away with confidence that all will go on happily and well. You will, I am sure, give Mr. and Mrs. Brooke a hearty welcome, and I hope that they will soon feel the friendliness of Hartlip people. Their have had a considerable experience of Village Church life, and they are both, I know ready to carry on the work here.

At a meeting of the Church Council, held on October 21st, which was attended by all the members, I mentioned some of the arrangements made for carrying on while I am away.

By a resolution of the Churchyard Committee, Mr. Luck acts as Treasurer of the Churchyard Fund, and the sum standing to the credit of the Wall Fund has been put into the General Fund, but earmarked for the building of the wall. The Council gave their approval of this. Colonel Locke has kindly agreed to act as School Correspondent and Treasurer, and as Treasurer for the Mary Gibbon's Charity. I any grateful to Mr. Luck and to Colonel Locke for taking my place.

Parishioners and others have again responded well to the appeal for funds for the upkeep of the Churchyard. The amount realised by the House-to-House Collection and subscriptions from outside the parish was £13/11/11.

For our Harvest Thanksgiving the Church was prettily decorated, but only a small quantity of fruit and vegetables was sent. The things were gratefully received at the Keycol Hospital, and the Matron told me how glad she was to have them. The congregations were not as large as last year, but no doubt some were kept away (particularly in the early morning) by the Weather.

The Gardeners' Gift Show, on October 12th, produced, as usual, a fine lot of exhibits, and Mr. Southgate, as auctioneer, drew good prices for them, and £12/14/3 was made for the Hospitals.

The Bishop of Dover will hold a Confirmation in our Church on Wednesday, October 30th, at 7 p,m. I much hope that a special effort will be made by our people to attend this service, to be witnesses of the Confirmation and to pray for those who are being Confirmed, as well as to show appreciation of the Bishop's visit to the parish. Eighteen are to be presented and they are to make their first Communion at the eight o'clock service on Sunday, November 3rd. It will be nice if their relatives and friends and others of our Communicants will be at this service with them, and I shall appreciate joining with many of my friends in the Lord's Own Service on the Sunday before I go away.

On Sunday, November 10th, there will be a Special Armistice Service in the evening, and on Monday, the 11th, there will be a short service at the War Memorial (if wet in the Church), at 10.45. The two minutes' silence will be observed at 11.

The accounts printed below will be of interest, and it is well to have them on record in the Magazine. No comment upon them is needed, but I should like to say that Mrs. Locke most kindly completed the payment for the White Altar Hangings and gave the Violet ones as Mr. Denson's bequest could not meet all the cost.

I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,

D. H. CREATON.
