The Vicarage,
June 5th, 1928.

My dear Friends, -

Under the circumstances you will excuse the Magazine being a little late this month, and my letter being rather a short one. I cannot but regret that illness has again kept me away from my work in Church and parish, and I am most grateful to those who have taken my place, and to Colonel Locke for the kind and thoughtful way in which he has made all the arrangements.

The concert given by the Hartlip Band on May 11th was a great success, both as to the quality of the performance and the well-filled room. It was very obvious that the hard work and keen interest of the conductor and the members of the band had borne good fruit. The net takings amounted to about £5. I hear that the Band spent an enjoyable day at Folkestone on May 19th, and received a favourable criticism from the judge on their performance at the competitions, and a 2nd prize certificate.

For the Mothers' Union and G.F.S. Entertainment on May 18th there was again a capital audience. The takings amounted to £6/4/0. Of this the G.F.S. receives £2/14/6 and the Mothers' Union £3/9/6, the members of the I.U. having kindly subscribed 15/0 to meet the expenses, so avoiding payment of tax. The G.F.S. candidates owe very much to Mrs. Sedge, who kindly made and gave all the pretty and effective dresses for their play.

In the Diocesan Competitions this year, our G.F.S. members and candidates have again done well. In team knitting the Hartlip team (M. Philpot, N. Philpot, and L. Simmons) was highly commended, and in individual work Mildred Harris was highly commended for laundry, and Lily Simmons for raffia flowers. In the candidates' section, Gladys Simmons was 1st in the Diocese for raffia work, and Marjorie Whitehead highly commended. At the competitions at Maidstone on May 12th, our candidates took lst place

in the Diocese for singing, and lst in the Maidstone Centre for dramatic, although our great rivals at Ash have again beaten us for lst place in the Diocese for this. Hartlip has, however, kept its proud place as 1st in the Diocese for best senior and junior recitations, Gladys Hollands and Myrtle Miles being the winners.

I remain,

Your sincere friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
