The Vicarage,
26th March, 1925.
My Dear Friends,-
It was encouraging to see a better attendance at the annual Church Meeting, on March 2nd. The Parochial Roll of Electors was presented to the meeting. It contairs this year 157 names. The Hon. Secretary, Mr. S. D. Hollands, gave a short account of the doings of the Council in the past year, and Colonel Locke also spoke about what had been done. The year has been marked by much important work in the Church and in the Churchyard, and by the visit to Hartlip of the Archbishop. The Churchwardens' accounts were presented and passed with a hearty vote of thanks to Colonel Locke for all his work his connection with them. Various other accounts of interest to parishioners were also put before the meeting. They are being printed, and a copy will be found in each Magazine. It was decided that the number of the members of the Church Council should be increased from 15 to 20. The following were elected to serve on it:- Messrs. W. Miles, J. Harriss, W. G. Kitchingham, J. Harris, L. Hales, E. I. Friar, W. H. Flack, S. D. Hollands, F. Musselwhite, W. S. Stevens, R. C. J. Southgate, L. J. J. Baxter, Miss Faussett-Osborne, Mrs. Creaton, Mrs. S. A. Friar, Mrs. Rainey, and Mrs. Hales, with the Vicar and Churchwardens.
Miss Faussett-Osborne, Mr. Southgate, and Mr. W. Miles were chosen as the representatives to the Ruridecanal Conference.
The following Sidesmen were appointed:- Messrs. W. H. Flack, E. T. Friar, L. Hales, G. Harriss, J. Harriss, S. D. Hollands, F. Musselwhite, W. S. Stevens, and R. C. J. Southgate:
The hearty thanks of the meeting was given to all the officers of the Church for their work.
The attendance at the annual Parish Meeting on 16th March, and the number of candidates for election to the Parish Council showed the keen interest of the parishioners in the civil affairs of the parish, and this is as it should be. We congratulate those who were chosen to serve on the Council, and the voting showed that those who were not elected were considered by many to the suitable men for the office, but as the number of members of the Council is limited, all could not be elected.
The Dean of Canterbury has made an arrangement by which each parish in the Diocese is in turn remembered in the Cathedral, and the prayers of the congregation asked for the work of the Church in the parish. Our turn comes on Saturday, May 2nd, and we are asked to pray for the Cathedral and its work. I propose that on this day we should have a Celebration of the Holy Communion at 8 a.m., and Mattins at 11 a.m., and on the following day (Sunday, May 3rd) we should have special prayers at all the services. I shall speak about this in the Church later on.
The arrangements for the services in Holy Week are given below. May I call your special attention to the Good Friday evening? Instead of the Lantern Service we are to have Stainer's "The Crucifixion." Mr. Lilwall has secured the help of Mr. T. Goad, of Rochester (tenor) and Mr. R. Howcroft, of Old Brompton (bass) for this, and our choir has been for some time practising the choruses. Copies of the words will be supplied to the congregation, and we hope to see a large number of people in the Church.
On Easter Day there will be three Celebrations of the Holy Communion. It is the day when ALL confirmed members of the Church are especially bidden to this Great Feast, and you will wish to come to the Lord's Own Service on the Day of His Resurrection. The Service of Preparation on the Thursday will be helpful. Please try to come to it.
I remain,
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
