26th June, 1924.
My Dear Friends,
I write this in the little bungalow we have here away in the fields, about a mile from the sea. We expect to be here till 17th or 18th of next month. You have with you in the Vicarage, Mr. Topley, who is not quite a stranger to Hartlip and he will gladly take my place in anything that may be required.
It was nice to have such a large gathering in the Vicarage garden last Sunday and I am sure that the performance of the band was greatly appreciated. The members are to be congratulated on the result of their diligent practice through the winter. The next gathering is to be on Sunday, July 20th.
Most of our members of the Girls' Friendly Society joined with other members in the Deanery, in the Branch Festival which was held this year at Dover on May 28th. The weather was delightful and an enjoyable day was spent by the sea. Tea was provided at Cave's Cafe at 4 o'clock and at 6 o'clock a special service was held in S. Mary's Church, when the Rev. C. H. Bailey, M. C., Rector of Buckland, gave a very helpful address. At the tea Mrs. Jones, the President of the Branch Council presented certificates for faithful membership. Miss Dorothy Cork received one for 14 years, and Miss Edith Apps one for 7 years.
On June 17th, another very pleasant outing took place. The members of the Women's Meeting and some others had a trip to Margate. It was a large party filling two motors. Margate was reached about 10 o'clock, and the long day at the sea in perfect weather was thoroughly enjoyed by all. About 60 adults and children sat down to the tea at "The Marina," a private hotel which is run by the Y.M.C.A., and where we were made to feel quite at home.
Application has now been made by the Parochial Church Council for a faculty to carry out the following work in the Lady Chapel. To remove the present window and to put in new stained glass and to place a tablet on the wall with the inscription at present in the window. To erect a Reredos and Altar Rails. To pave the Sanctuary with marble. To place in the Chapel a Priest's Desk and a Credence Table. We hope that all this work, will be carried out in the course of the next three or four months. When it is finished the side Chapel should be very beautiful.
It has been decided to hold a Sale of Work in the Vicarage garden on Wednesday, August 13th, in aid of parochial funds. Special stalls will be provided by the Women's Meeting and the G.F.S. There will also be a Rummage Stall and a "General" Stall, and we shall be grateful for any contributions for these stalls, to be sent to the Vicarage. There will be a Fairy Play by G.F.S. candidates and various other attractions. Further particulars will be given next month.
Your sincere Friend and Vicar,
D. H. CREATON.
Parents of the children and other parishioners will be pleased to read the excellent Report of the Diocesan Inspector on the Religious Instruction given in our School:-
"I visited this School on Friday, June 6th, and questioned the children on their Scripture knowledge and Prayer Book.
"The Infants answered well and shewed a very good grasp of the Bible stories they had learned, and it was evident that they are being carefully taught.
"The children in the other standards were very bright, and eager, and answered all the questions I put to them.
"They know their Scripture well and have a thorough knowledge of the Catechism and Church Seasons.
"This is a good School and the high standard of religious education will evidently be maintained under the new Head, who has just been appointed."
C. S. WATKINS, Diocesan Inspector.
The Churchyard.
The Deed of Conveyance of the land to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to be held for ever as a part of the Churchyard has now been signed and the work of preparing the ground has been begun under the superintendence of Mr. Pearcy.
It will be a difficult and expensive job to get rid of the big roots, but it must be done before the ground can be properly levelled.
We want to call particular attention to the following notice which is posted on the Church board:-
At a Meeting of the Parochial Church Council, held on Friday, June 20th, the following Resolution was passed. "That the following recommendation of the Churchyard Committee be approved. That the whole of the Churchyard west of the Vicarage door, and of the yew tree near the School play ground be levelled, and that the work be proceeded with as soon as possible in order that the surplus soil may be put in the new addition to the Churchyard.
Any persons having interest in graves in this portion of the Churchyard and desiring to mark them must commnicate with Lt.-Col. Locke, Dane House, Hartlip, before Tuesday, July 15th, 1924.
(Signed) D. H. CREATON, Chairman of the Council."
June 21st, 1924.
The ground in this part of the Churchyard is in a very bad state and, owing largely to the working of ants it is much above its proper level. It can only be kept nice by being treated as the Committee and the Council have decided and then thoroughly rolled. The work must be done before the new ground is finished and the surplus soil will be very useful there. We are all most anxious to meet, as far as possible, the wishes of any wish have interest in graves in this part of the Churchyard but it must be understood that such wishes must expressed be to Col. Locke before July 15th. After this date the Committee propose to proceed with the work. We all wish to see the old ground as well as the new made and kept as "God's Acre" should be.
