Hartlip Parish Magazine - July, 1920.
Dear Friends,
It was a red-letter day in our history on May 27th, when, with our flag flying on the Tower, we welcomed the genial Lord Bishop of Dover on his first visit to Hartlip.
The Ringers had the privilege of shaking hands with his Lordship, after which they rang a half-muffled peal for the Memorial-Dedication Service at 7 p.m, at which hour a very large and representative congregation met in Church, and followed most attentively the dedication of the two highly-finished oak panels hanging on the West and East walls of the Porch also the dedication of the 'Ecce Homo" (picture) and other gifts in the Lady Chapel.
One oak panel registers the names of the TEN men who fell, and the other, the names of the who survived: both forming a PARISH RECORD of (those who were considered) HARLTIP MEN, who did their bit in the Great War days.
The Bishop gave a very helpful address, which together with the deep feeling expressed in the singing of the hymns greatly contributed to a very impressive Service. Col. Locke and Sir Wm. Haggard fulfilled their historic office as Churchwardens in escorting the Bishop: the sidesmen also loyally assisted in the processions.
Immediately after this, and before railway fares were increased, I ran up North for a few days, to visit old spheres of labour (of 37 years ago) known to the Bishop of Dover in recent times. There one rejoiced to find some of the boys one taught in those far-off days, though now fathers and well-nigh grandfathers, are to-day staunch members of the Church, and loyally helping it on, and bearing its burdens. One thanks God, and takes courage, when thus allowed to see the labours of other days bearing fruit.
The "Lambeth Conference" is an assembly of Bishops, which meets every ten years, from all parts of the world; their gatherings are held in Lambeth Palace, hence its name. It was anticipated that more than 350 Bishops would attend this year, but now about 275 in number will be welcomed in our Cathedral at Canterbury on Saturday, July 3rd, and will sit at Lambeth for five weeks from that date, seriously considering subjects of all kinds, and of far reaching importance to the Christian Church in all lands. Our Archbishop writes:— "It is a solemn time, and we sorely
need the prayers of all faithful people." Let us not fail to do this daily throughout the five weeks.
An evening paper recently had a leading article entitled, "Towards Lower Prices." It said, "Whether the fall actually takes place, however, depends solely on the public, and particularly on the working classes. What is the reason of the high prices? Just this, a short supply, and an enlarged demand. Goods are scarce, and "money" is plentiful. So, men and women feeling themselves better off, will indulge in greater consumption and the consumption being greater than the supply, prices rise far more than double: and the last state of the consumer is worse than the first. Sir Henry Morris has pointed out, that the only way to put an end to it is to go without, that is, to refuse to buy more than absolute necessities until prices fall. If this were done the trader, then, having so few buyers would be compelled to reduce his prices.
There are a few annual Magazine subscriptions for 1920 not yet heard of, can they possibly be in the pocket of an aged coat? or lurking in the corner of the cash box? or hiding in the letter box? if not in the recesses of your forgettory? search at once!
The quality of the Magazine cover was guaranteed for six months, that has been loyally carried out by our printer. But paper is a very difficult problem, and if necessity arises, we must be content with all inferior quality.
Your faithful Friend and Pastor,
J. SMEDLEY McMILLAN.
