Hartlip Parish Magazine - April, 1919.
Dear Friends,
On Saturday, March 15, we laid to rest in his sister's grave, alongside that of his mother, the body of Thomas Godden, who died at Newington, where he was tenderly cared for by his married sister and family. He lived for very many years at Grainey Farm, and maintained a happy home for his mother during her life, and for his two sisters who - strange to say - died in March, 1917, and March, 1918. He, therefore, stands out an example of faithful duty at home, as also evidenced by the care and time expended on his flowers and garden. He was no less faithful in his duty to his Church; it was joy to him to occupy his place in the Choir, and with his powerful voice to lead the praises of God. Thomas Godden was quiet, modest, unobtrusive, unassertive, steadfast in purpose, true to his Church and the Sacraments to the last; a man whose loss is felt, but whose example may be copied with great advantage.
Mr. J. Labrum relinquishes the organistship of the Church at Easter. In his resignation he gives the reason that having had his Sundays engaged for so many years - here and elsewhere - he now desires to have a rest. This is a very reasonable desire, and one which we can quite well and do enter into. Indeed some of us, when "the labourers are few" and so much is left to us to do on Sundays, in which others might and ought to give help, we feel a great longing to have a rest from the unbroken and incessant varied duties of the present Sunday.
Mr. Labrum has taken pains with his work, and acquiesced in my suggestions from time to time, for which I would express my sincere gratitude. From the various applicants, I have chosen one who seems to be a capable organist.
As regards the Organ Repairs Fund Appeal, it met with a most sympathetic reception both in the smallest cottages as also in the largest houses the result being that the total of £8 l5s. has been received. To all the donors I most readily ascribe the credit for enabling me so promptly to pay the bill, so that our music is not flat owing to debt.
As I write, momentous issues are at stake in the labour world, and we have reached the hour of decision. May a spirit of reasonableness and co-operation prevail among all the leaders of conflicting interests. May we continually pray that goodwill and concord, Godly union and Christ-like sympathy will win through the crisis, and also prevail afterwards. Let the, Peace Con-
ference in Paris have a share in our daily prayer, and also the establishment of a League of Nations.
As regards a War Memorial, I hope we shall have one, in the most suitable of all places, viz., the Parish Church. And the porch might be the part with oak panelling containing the "Heroic dead" on one wall, and those "who served" on the opposite, &c., &c. This would be comprehensive and include every man.
May every communicant prepare for, and be present at the Easter celebration "in remembrance of Him," Who on that memorable day "rose again from the dead."
Your faithful Friend and Vicar,
J. S. McMILLAN.
