HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.

JULY, 1915.

Dear Friends,

Many of you must have noticed the handsome white Frontal which we used for the first time on Easter Day, and the following six weeks. The embroidery work is of the first order; and the delicate blue shading in the large centre cross, as also in the fleur-de-lys of the super-frontal, is quite up to the standard of Messrs. J. Wippell and Co.'s first-class work.

This frontal is a fairly costly one, but you will be pleased to know that it is paid for.

We now aim at getting a Violet frontal, so that the old moth infested one can be burnt. Who will give it? Or subscribe to it? Or make something to sell, towards it?

Our Parish has really done exceedingly well in the manner in which it has responded both in money and in kind to the various appeals resulting from the war. Mrs. Labrum, for instance, undertook to make jelly, which, as many of you know, necessitates a considerable amount of work; then again to find purchasers for it; this she succeeded in accomplishing, with the satisfactory result that 27s. was forw arded to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester, with which screens were purchased for the comfort of the soldiers there.

Then several of you at the mere suggestion, most readily sent pots of jam to the vicarage, which enabled us to take up to the hospital 56lbs. for the soldiers on June 1; needless to say this was greatly welcomed. Mrs. McMillan will be glad to receive any further contributions of a similar kind, and forward them to the Hospital.

As regards the war with its appalling loss of young life, what are we at home doing to bring victory to our cause? Are we more given to prayer than ever before? For if we fail to seek God's help and blessing in this great fight for Justice, Truth and Honour, we are making the greatest mistake possible. Let us remember that our enemy, Germany, has - to quote a public man - "no scruples, no principle, no morality, except success: he has, on the other hand, courage and resourcefulness, which in a better cause might win the admiration of the world. He is strong, mainly because the whole nation is organised for war. If we are to Win, and it won't be easy, we must as a nation be organised too: every one who can, doing a bit to help on the great cause." Not like the Midland tram and busmen who refuse to work with women. When women help to do the

work of the country, where men are scarce, they are assisting the Government to win the war. All honour to the women, who being able, are willing to do their bit for the general welfare. Let all help in every way possible, and be ready to put up with inconveniences in these difficult times: not thinking so much of ourselves as of our Country and Victory; for remember that defeat means ruin to everyone of us, with untold suffering and misery.

But Victory necessitates every one doing their part loyally and uncomplainingly, and all being inspired with Christian Patriotism. Yes, God must be in it all, and with us, else what we do will be to no purpose whatsoever. As we read of the hard things our heroes are going through day and night in the trenches, in the air, and on the sea, their cry to us seems to be, "OH, BRETHREN, pray for us."

We can do this at home, and especially join with others in God's house, for has He not said, "Where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them." What an encouragment it must be to the brave fellows, who are risking their lives for us, to know we meet together regularly to pray for them!

Your faithful friend and Pastor,

J. S. McMILLAN.
