HARTLIP PARISH MAGAZINE.
OCTOBER, 1908.
Dear Friends,
During the past few weeks we have had a series of events of a varied nature. On St. Bartholomew's Day (August 24) we had a short Special Service in Church at 3.30 in connection with the Mothers' Union, after which all adjourned to the Vicarage Lawn, where a most appropriate and practical address was given to the mothers by Mrs. Webster, of Rainham, for which she was heartily thanked by the Vicar at the close. Then followed a social cup of tea, not the least enjoyable part of which was having it in the open air, and being WAITED UPON.
The day following Mrs. McMillan took the G.F.S. Candidates to Rochester for their Outing, when they went over the Museum, the Cathedral, and stayed to the Service; then roamed through the Castle Gardens; also climbed to the summit of its tower. Tea and shrimps closed the programme.
On the following Thursday - August 27 - the Vicar and Mrs. McMillan took the Children's Guild to Herne Bay, where they spent a most enjoyable day in various ways. We partook of luncheon in picnic fashion: our tablecloth being laid on the newly-washed shingle, was overspread with dainty pasties and wholesome sandwiches, which were washed away with the tide of lemonade, and fully appreciated in the brilliant sunshine and spicy breezes from Sheppey's Isle.
The event of surpassing interest was the erection and completion of the Reredos last month, and its Dedication on Sunday, the 6th, at 11 a.m., "to the glory of God, and in memory of the Rev. H. G. Godfrey Faussett-Osborne," formerly Vicar of Littleton, Worcestershire, who died in 1878, having inherited Hartlip Place, on the death of his cousin, Will. Bland. in 1869. Appropriate Lessons were read, and special hymns sung, which were associated with him in whose memory the Reredos was erected.
A Church is a sacred building in its entirety.
As we treat the Churchyard in a very different manner from the School yard: so also the Schoolroom does not demand the reverent step and behaviour that is becoming in God's House. Correspondingly, the part within the Communion rails is more sacred still, and is worthy of our highest and best, both materially and spiritually, seeing it is there we receive "the memorial of His Death." Now, I am happy to say, the Sanctuary of our Church is - what it ought to be - the most attractive and highly-adorned part of the building: for there, beautifully carved by the sculptor's art, is a representation of The Lord's Supper in Caen stone, after the famous fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, in the refectory of St. Maria delle Grazie, Milan.
It is a commanding picture of the panelled upper room, the Saviour in bold relief, the twelve in bas-
relief, the animated faces, the bread and the cups on the long table. It certainly is a sermon in stone, which I trust will speak in its silent eloquence to all beholders.
Mr. Hy. G. Faussett-Osborne has been most painstaking in arranging the details, and in overlooking the erection, of the Reredos; and it is to him, his Mother, and family that we are indebted for this worthy adornment of the House of God.
Our Harvest Festival is a little later than I hoped; but it is fixed for October 4, when there will be a Celebration of Holy Communion at 8 and at noon. The Preacher at 11 will be the Rev. J. M. Tamplin, and at 6.30 the Rev. Oswald Blogg, Chaplain of H.M.S. "Acheron." A Children's Service will be held at 3.
I remain, yours sincerely,
J. S. McMILLAN.
